I have been working at FortisBC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good. The hours can be flexible (depending on your manager). Paycheque is always on time. The office is nice looking and the cafeteria has improved over the years.

    Cons

The company believes that they put employees near the top of the priority list. They don't. They constantly say they want things to be more efficient, but when employees make suggestions they are ignored. Rather than listen to their own employees they hired a Consulting firm to find out why they weren't efficient. Things only got worse. Layoffs. Hiring freeze. Overtime bans. The people doing the work, the people speaking with the customers every day, the people who attend emergencies in the middle of the night are stretched to the breaking point. However upper management feels there is more than enough staff, they feel there should be more reductions. Please note that the hiring freeze does not apply to management jobs. There are more and more people hired to manage... but who are they managing? Managers have money in the budget to upgrade their company vehicles and personal equipment, but if a regular employee needs something they're told that there's no money in the budget. The company is focused on saving money... but in all the wrong places. They don't listen to their staff and everyone feels quite lost. It used to be a place where people were loyal to the company, proud to go to work. Not anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your people. Stop hiring outside consultants to tell you what is wrong. Your people will tell you. Try listening. You have managed to erode any trust or goodwill you have built with your employees over the years. Even when you do something that sounds good, everyone wonders "what's the catch". You need to start showing your employees some loyalty and respect.

I have been working at FortisBC full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Industry leading pay and benefits.

    Cons

Management team has no accountability for their actions and will blame others for poor decisions and results. Facts and experience are irrelevant when it comes to performance management. Subjective opinions are what determine your success at this company. Impossible to move up in this company as outside new hires with minimal to no qualifications can and have been hired over more experienced internal employees. If you are not a "yes" person who likes to play politics, you will not be successful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your front line employees. They are the ones who are feeling the effects of poor management and decisions from their managers. You know there are problems yet you stand idle and allow certain managers to make poor decisions without being responsible for the results. I suggest having a 3rd party company come in and perform an anonymous job satisfaction survey with all results made public. None of this internal job satisfaction survey which miraculously shows how perfect the current management team is.

I have been working at FortisBC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people are great and there is a true feeling of team amongst frontline employees, often in the face adversity and inherent industry hazards associated with the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity.

    Cons

This company has shown a blatant disregard to it's field employees , and it's frontline managers livelihood, and quality of life.l

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself if you have your greed in check? Union workers have provided you with a safe, efficient and Profitable business. The relationship you inherited between your frontline workers and managers is being fractured and the sooner you realize this the better your business will continue to profit. How many consecutive quarters?... 18 or so, not bad!

    Cons

Does not care for worker or middle management only profits and share holders

I have been working at FortisBC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good work force, good at what they do, workers willing to train and show people the ropes, different trades work as a team to get the job done, workers care about safety and safety procedures.

    Cons

Upper Management have no management skills due to Yes Man Attitude and the I did not say what I just said attitude, Middle management have no back bone to protect their workers or to offer better training besides online training, Safety only is for the workforce and not the Management, Job organization skills are left to the worker due to Management Laziness or not knowing what the jobs are about, not being fair and lying to the work force about the collective agreement. No apprentice programs unless you are a lineman.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees like you want them to treat you!!! Not like a piece of meat!!! Take accountability of your actions and stop the lies, bargain in good faith. and remember your work force is the ones that make your bonuses not your skills. Remember we are the shareholders that make this company successful not the people that sit behind desks and have Lawyers speak for them
