I have been working at Frank, Rimerman +Co., LLP full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great people overall. The managers and partners are pretty understanding of their staff and try hard to make the work environment a pleasant and enjoyable one. It's an entrepreneurial environment which means there are opportunities if you go for them. Effort and passion are definitely recognized here, and the firm does have more of a family feel to it than some other places where you might just be a number; a good alternative to any big 4 firm.

    Cons

Long hours during busy season, but that goes for any public accounting firm. Benefits not as good as one would wish.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve benefits, offer HSA high deductible health insurance.

The place to be if you want to work in public accounting!

I have been working at Frank, Rimerman +Co., LLP full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The long-run opportunities at Frank Rimerman are amazing. The ladder to the top is no where close as cutthroat as the big 4. Hours throughout the year for a tax associate are very fair. Tax seasons are bad, but the down time is pretty relaxed. Management here is practically unparalleled. They are friendly, patient, down to earth, and considerate of how staff feel.
There is a tremendous amount of flexibility. You can be lazy and get by and you will never be fired. Or you can own your work, and carve out your career path, and eventually make a lot of money. Either work at this firm, at least for the first few years.

    Cons

Tax season can be brutal, but its nothing like the Big 4. One should differentiate this job compared to a "normal" 9-5 job, and compared to a Big 4 job. If I were to stay in tax and/or public accounting forever, the Big 4 is the last place I would do it, and Frank Rimerman would be an excellent bet for the long haul. Office politics can nit pick at morale. Management wastes too much money in recruiting; the same level of recruiting could be achieved without burning so much money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Processes within the tax department can be extremely inefficient at times. Procedures should be more standardized, or work groups should be smaller. Managements knowledge and skills should be available to the staff without the staff having to waste managements time. People ask the same questions over and over and over, and the current "resource" doesn't cut it, so people either eat in to managements time or don't ever bother asking. Also, buying $500 cupcakes every other day during busy season doesn't appease morale like a small bonus or saturday off would.

Professional, challenging, but a Big 4 in disguise

I worked at Frank, Rimerman +Co., LLP

    Pros

Challenging work, excellent clientele & early exposure to complex tax issues. Co-workers are very kind and quite easy to get along with. High learning curve with an opportunity to excel quickly.

    Cons

No work-life balance observed, just a lot of talk about it. Super long hours during busy season (think a minimum of 70 to 80 true hours, maybe 60 on paper after you eat 10-20 hours to meet unreasonable budgets).

No overtime and little reward to staff for long hours. Constant micro-managing from senior management can be a nuisance.

Sink or swim environment with only hard skills recognized. Soft skills go unnoticed.

Good place for boot camp, but not a long term destination for your career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expect reasonable hours from your people, not a work-a-holic mentality. A true work-life balance and bringing back overtime may help employees become more motivated to work longer hours.
