I have been working at Franklin County, Ohio full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, opportunities for growth, wellness incentive is beneficial. Eager to keep employees healthy.

    Cons

The parking is frustrating; the wait list for a monthly pass is incredibly long. Additionally, the monthly cost is expensive $75.00 per month.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to keep staff informed, keep up good work with wellness initiatives.

I worked at Franklin County, Ohio full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are outstanding and work weeks are only 40 hours.

    Cons

I worked for two different courts. They are horribly managed. The Judges get final approval on everything (policies, personnel, practices) but don't have a clue what is really going on. They "dabble" in management and make horrible decisions based on favored staff that they listen to. There is an executive management team with ZERO management ability. Once in a while they make a mistake and bring in a good manager and that person barely lasts 2 years. They do NOT want change and they can't accept the truth. It's just a bunch of lazy managers putting in their 30 years for a cushy retirement. I was there much too long and left with all the other good people. There are very few people in those courts that have a clue. They don't offer any good training or skill upgrades and they don't require supervisors or managers to have any skills and they don't care. It's all about cliques and groups and the culture is so bad they stab you in the front! The groups divide along racial lines....do NOT work there, you will hate it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either get rid of the useless "executive staff" and let the Judges really manage it or hire some qualified executive staff and get the Judges noses out of the business. It's structure is just a big failure with Judges and their pet people making decisions that aren't based on facts or reality. This is all about who you know and what group you belong to.

I worked at Franklin County, Ohio full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Benefits are excellent (to compensate for overall lower pay but still remain high when you have negotiated a decent salary), Work life balance (place is a ghost town after 5), Promotion/job opportunities from within.

    Cons

Management structure is politics based and can change with any election. Affiliation with reigning group is sometimes needed. You can have positive interaction/outlook with management one day only to lose all your advocates shortly thereafter ( situation can reverse itself as well). Lots of conflicts with each group/department; All these sub organization are charged to work together and ofttimes do it with suspicion and conflict.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to create policies and conduct overall management to be independent of the individuals in charge. In other words create a management atmosphere that is not dependent upon any specific person(s). This will open communications and get better performance out of all staff and agencies.

    Cons

No dining facilties at the present time, you either have to bring your lunch or walk a few blocks to get something tasty.

Current Employee - Administrative Assistant I in Columbus, OH

I have been working at Franklin County, Ohio

    Pros

Job security; this is a local sheriff's office and unfortunately we will always have crime. Court proceedings that the sheriff has to oversee, and serve court papers and etc. Health insurance is one of the best available. Most positions here are union, however there are about 40 or so that are not and they are exempt.

    Cons

Shift work. It is hard for someone if they have never had to do shift work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Civilians are just important as deputies, and are the backbone of the office. Deputies would surely not do a civilians job.
