    Pros

Great people, exciting projects, being a part of changes in higher education, innovative thinking, talented employees, great benefits, lots of perks

    Cons

Strategic planning often derailed by opportunities to come up, whether they pan out or not. Investing a lot of time in new projects that may go nowhere while the day-to-day work suffers is frustrating, especially when held accountable for that work.

    Advice to Management

Spend time with your people and see what obstacles they face. Empower them to solve problems through open communication, access to resources, and being open to their ways of solving problems.

    Pros

Progressive, future-focused, tech oriented. Franklin is different than many higher ed institutions to the delight and detriment of many. Depending on your perspective, it can either be a blessing or a curse. Work-life balance is decent if you are talking flexibility. Absolutely fantastic benefits from professional development to ample paid time off. Salary is competitive if you are willing to fight for it.

    Cons

Interesting leadership and management styles across the board - definitely not for everyone. Franklin is innovative and moves at the speed of light. You will almost never have a chance to "catch a breath."

    Advice to Management

Transparency is important and valued by your employees.

    Pros

The employees here are some of the most hard-working, loyal, and friendly people that you will ever meet. You can expect to make strong and lasting friendships here. The health insurance and retirement benefits are wonderful and the time off that you receive (including a long winter break) is hard to find anywhere else.

    Cons

It has become a very difficult place to work. Morale is at an all-time low. Employees are being asked to take on more and more work (without additional compensation) and stress levels are very high across campus. The working environment is very negative and the outlook for the near future is not positive.

    Advice to Management

Better value the contributions of all of your employees. Listen to all of your employees because they often have excellent suggestions for making improvements. Decisions are always made at the top and management is not open to new ideas.

  9. Decent, but flawed.

    Pros

Some of the people (usually non-management) are very good. Management holds periodic large scale meetings to keep employees informed about the institution. Employes are recognized for doing a good job. Nice benefits.

    Cons

Micromanagement. Compensation not very competitive with other institutions. While there are some opportunities for improvement, management seems to prefer outside candidates over promoting and training internal employees.

    Advice to Management

Ease up on the micromanagement and let your people do their jobs. Reward the good ones by offering advancement opportunity and better compensation.

    Pros

You will get to work with very skilled peers and the managers directly above the dev teams are great. I have read the reviews here about senior management and that sounds like axe grinding. None of that affects me at all. No middle management.

    Cons

No clear path for contractor to be converted to employees yet.

    Advice to Management

Contractors are more motivated and bought-in when they have hope to become employees.

    Pros

Great benefits, get to work with truly nice, talented individuals that care about students.

    Cons

Questionable promotions from within, not based on merit. There is no real internal job posting system, and people are just promoted mysteriously. They are overly tolerant of bad management, and many people who fail at their jobs just get reassigned.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Do real candidate searches instead of hiring from within. Revise performance reviews so they have meaning.
