I have been working at Fraunhofer Gesellschaft

    Pros

You work at the interface of academia and industry with high expectations and huge pressure.

    Cons

A german mentality againts internationalization dominates the atmosphere of FHG. Systematic and informed descrimination is applied against certain nationalities at Fraunhofer institute. A modern slavery system has been deplyoed to import international PhD students from developing countries and pay them half position while working on industrial projects full time. Overall, doing a PhD at Fraunhofer Institute is not recommended.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be open to the international community, respect international colleagues, and change your discriminatory mindset!!

I have been working at Fraunhofer Gesellschaft full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Time flexibility & variety of projects (not just a single product to support for years).
    Friendly atmosphere.

    Cons

Software development process is weak. No clear roles (flat hierarchy and low motivation). Rotation of employees impacts the quality of the software.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

6 years limit for the contract is a bad idea: people leave the company and bring away the competence. The newbies require years to catch up.

I worked at Fraunhofer Gesellschaft full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It was a good place to work at as it was located in Germany, a lot of benefits was provided to its workers. They are also working on some big projects currently.

    Cons

Like in every other company, there was a bit of problem with project management. There were problems that no one knew how to solve, and you had to grind away at it yourself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sometimes more organization is much more important!

I have been working at Fraunhofer Gesellschaft full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Industrial experience that you can gain while doing your PhD. Also, you can learn to sell science at Fraunhofer which gives you an edge over other academic scientists.

    Cons

For all your handwork compensation is negligible. Also if you are doing a PhD side by side it always takes a long to complete as your focus suffers because of other project commitments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better compensation and personal growth should be encouraged.

I have been working at Fraunhofer Gesellschaft

    Pros

Not many. A strong emphasis on applied research means working with German companies, but not seeing the outcomes of these projects is demotivating.

    Cons

•Older scientists as well as administrative and technical staff have permanent contracts and, consequently, have no incentive to learn new things. This is stifling for younger scientists with new ideas.

•Pay is limited to the German public service system, with some small performance bonuses. Low pay means Fraunhofer fails to attract and retain talented people. The less talented ones stay and are eventually given permanent contracts.

•Real research is often viewed as time-wasting; more emphasis is placed on satisfying industry clients, regardless of the real value of the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sadly, these things are largely a consequence of German government policy and cannot be changed by management.
