Great people & benefits, Decent pay, Some management problems

    Data Analyst (Current Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsAs the title says, the people are great, as is often the case in not-for-profit. For the most part, everyone wants to be there, which makes a difference to the overall culture and environment. The benefits are great and the pay is on par with for-profits.

ConsBecause this is a not-for-profit it does suffer from certain infrastructure/management problems. Depending on your department, you have doctors or nurses doubling as managers. (Management is a skill, and just because you are a bigwig does not mean you have that skill.) Because this is a healthcare industry, they behind the times in certain technological areas (some jobs still use old fax machines, for example). Depending on your job, there may not be room for advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers should be adept at management, not just knowledgeable in medicine or nursing. Hire accordingly.

Great faculty, good opportunities for learning, limited options for advancement.

    Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsWorld-class faculty, noble research goals, fantastic location and facilities, friendly environment. Working here you can feel like you are making a contribution to society by generating knowledge to aid in the understanding of cancer, and potentially work towards programs aimed at improving cancer prevention and treatment. Generally very supportive PIs that allow for independence of work topics, flexibility of hours, and ongoing education and training.

ConsVery difficult to move up within the organization for junior people or recent graduates. Can feel like a second-class citizen if you are not tenure-track faculty. People are generally friendly, but you need to go out of your way to meet people. Group/lab experience tends to vary widely by PI/division. Some provide more support than others, especially with non-faculty positions. Recently the marketing/business aspects of the non-profit have been ramped up, sometimes it seems to the detriment of the science.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide more opportunities and training for junior investigators and non-faculty.

    Great place to work

    Nurse Practitioner (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsGreat cause, cutting edge science, socially responsible to environment, surrounding community and employees by encouraging carpooling, biking to work, flexible hours, recycling/composting, organic menus, onsite childcare (although difficult to get in). Was one of the first employers in WA State to provide nursing rooms.

ConsDifficult to find parking if you are an off-site employee and need to go to main campus for meetings. Largely funded by grants and private donations so is highly affected by fluctuations in economy.

Fantastic science, non-science management less so, job security-severance nil.

    Administrative Manager (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsWhip-smart people (science end), doing something important, if you get the right supervisor/manager you can have a great career. If you get cancer, they treat you well.

ConsWhen grant money runs out, you're out the door even after 20 years, 55+. No severance at all. There is favoritism & socializing outside of work can be more important for lay-offs. It's unspoken, but older women (non scientists) are less desirable despite skills, references, experience. How you're treated & paid depends on supervisor, some great, some lousy.

    Transition hurts and is necessary

    Fundraising (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsGreat scientific teams who have high standards, positive attitudes, and integrity. Working for the best goals with the best scientists.

ConsBusiness development team is comprised of difficult personalities, managing by shame and blame, and untrustworthy executives.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean house at the top of business development and fundraising and start over. Cultivate a positive, trustworthy environment for all involved. Use the scientific teams as your role model then build upon that.
