    Pros

There are many opportunities for advancement. The management is nice and understanding. The front end is unionized. It is part of the Kroger family of stores which is doing very well.

    Cons

They are very busy on the weekends and cashiers don't get a break between customers for hours. Cashiers are made to sign cash shortage slips on registers they only worked on for a few minutes. Registers are shared with no individual accountability, but video surveillance helps.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice if there was a floating bagger to help the cashiers out with large purchases. Hire more cashiers, especially on the weekends.

    Pros

Professional Environment. Adequate ancillary staffing. Realistic Management expectations. Opportunity to advance professional service and clinical pharmaceutical care opportunities.

    Cons

If you are lazy or lack self-initiative as a Pharmacist you would probably not enjoy working in an environment that can become as busy as a Fred Meyer Pharmacies are. We are connected to our customers and service is work.

    Advice to Management

Continue to support staffing levels and support pharmaceutical care opportunities. The services that Fred Meyer Pharmacy's provide put customers health first and in doing so provide a benefit to customers that connects them to our stores as life long customers.

    Pros

Starting in any department gets your foot in the door to start working your way up. There are five major departments to work at the store level as well as main office operations, logistics/warehouse, and other Kroger affiliated positions. If you are a good worker they will frequently call you in for more hours than you are originally allotted allowing you to gain valuable experience and bonus points with managers. There are around 300 Fred Meyer stores to work at so if you like a change of scenery in the Northwest there's probably a Fred Meyer for you to work at.

    Cons

Not enough constructive feedback from some managers. Frequent manager shifts so don't get used to a particular one. The only way to move up in the company is to work at different stores so in store promotions are generally not allowed. Zones can often times be large so Zone 2 is southwest Washington and some of Portland while Zone 1 is the greater Portland area. Other zones are even larger like the Idaho/Utah or Alaska regions.

    Advice to Management

More access is needed for recent college grads both in store and in the main office. Talent is being wasted by putting this people in general PIC positions. They need to be the future of the company and while it is important to get the experience of the lower branches down they also need to be recruited for furthering themselves throughout the company.

    Pros

Friendly co-workers, they work with your schedule if you have restrictions, fantastic medical benefits at a great price, good pension plan. There's a lot of room to move up with this company if you're willing to put in the effort and not slack like everyone else.

    Cons

You have to murder someone to have even a bit of a chance at full-time, a lot of the management can't seem to figure out how to do their jobs, many people aren't properly punished for the mistakes that they make, and there are too many attempts (some successful) at firing people who don't deserve to be fired.

    Advice to Management

What's good for one, is good for all. Nobody needs special treatment, nobody needs anything extra- it's a job, if they haven't figured that out yet, they need to go home and take a good hard look at their lives.

    Pros

I like the people I work with. Most of the Managers are competent and really seems to notice the employees who work hard and their jobs.

    Cons

Sometimes mistakes get made in the hiring process and people who are not a good fit end up in a job the is ill-suited for them. People who are terrible at their jobs don't get fired because it would cost the company more money to train someone new then to just keep the terrible person.

    Advice to Management

Be careful in the hiring process. Don't settle for joe blow of the street just because you need a warm body to fill a job.

    Pros

The culture at Fred Meyer is really great, they really respect and value their employees. Everyone, from management on down, seemed to enjoy working there and seemed to be in a good mood the majority of the time. I only worked there on a temporary basis (summers during college) but I very much enjoyed it and I would recommend it to anyone. I've heard of much, much worse retail work experiences.

    Cons

The only downside was the schedule--as a new hire I often had to work the closing shift, which was 2 pm to 11 pm, and often weekends as well. But I should add that everyone had to deal with the crazy schedules, not just those on the bottom of the food chain. The only person who never had to stay late was the head manager--he generally worked about 9 to 5--but even he would stay late if needed, i.e. if the relief manager had an unexpected emergency or was sick. I suppose another downside is that Fred Meyer employees are union-represented, which means you have to pay about $40 to join the union, plus monthly dues, and (at least as far as I ever saw) you don't really reap any benefit from it. Plus, the union status means that once an employee is hired, it's very VERY difficult for them to ever get fired, even if (frankly) they should be. As an example, my department hired a guy who was very nice but amazingly incompetent (I mean really, it doesn't take a lot of brain power to do this job, yet he had difficulties), yet he stayed on because he would have had to do something really grievous to get fired.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. The culture at Fred Meyer is very healthy, and the employees feel valued as individuals. But get rid of the union if at all possible! Your employees would be better off without it.

    Pros

Great Benefits, great co-workers, Willing to work with my personal schedule, good pay, love the employee discounts on groceries, clothing, home items, friendly place to work, most of all the family type atmosphere.

    Cons

Some early morning opening shifts, some late evening closing shifts, having to dump garbage outside sometimes during the cold winter months

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to be more aware of what each department needs for personnel and should rely more on the department managers to do their own scheduling, department managers know what they need for their department.
