I worked at Freddie Mac (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The salary and flexible work arrangements are very good. There are a lot of very dedicated employees at Freddie Mac who are extremely diligent in their work.

    Cons

The company is making a lot of cuts to flatten the organizational structure. This is causing a lot of unease among employees.

    Advice to Management

Management should be aware of the unease the current cuts are causing among employees. Management should also be commended for implementing the existing flexible work arrangement program.

I worked at Freddie Mac (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I thoroughly enjoyed what I was doing at Freddie Mac.

    Cons

The favoritism with some manager's and director's affects other staff members....especially when it is so obvious. Credit is not given fairly to other staff members, especially if they are not in "favor" with the director. It is very hard to hear 1 person being recognized for doing something that was accomplished by other co-workers at a dept meeting.

    Advice to Management

Have faith in your team....and don't put down employee's in manager dept meetings as it always leeks out to the dept, and eventually to the person being talked about. Management is SUPPOSE to set an example, not create discord among the staff. Freddie Mac has a great culture & values policy, it's just a shame management doesn't use it.

I worked at Freddie Mac full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very flexible. Great benefits and great people to work with.

    Cons

Too many re-orgs. Upper management should talk to the employees more before making big changes.

I have been working at Freddie Mac full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule (including working from home) Excellent facilities and work-life balance A lot of opportunities for lateral movement

    Cons

Very risk averse Heavily dependent on consultants Heavily dependent on proprietary technologies Push innovation for the sake of innovation

    Advice to Management

Try moving to open source technologies and hire more full-time employees. Consultants take their knowledge with them and they are not thinking about the company beyond the end of the contract (and sometimes not even that!)

I worked at Freddie Mac (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The work life balance was good

    Cons

Constant changing management Information security was extremely scrutinized. Never recognized for what was right, but always for what was wrong. The business side got awards for turning in reports on time, whereas the IT or Info Sec Teams hardly ever got recognized for anything good. Raises are few and way too far between depending on the team you work for.

    Advice to Management

Keep it more stable. Instability in upper management is a big reason why retention rates are absolutely terrible among newcomers

I have been working at Freddie Mac full-time

    Pros

Great work/life balance, solid cafeteria food, nice (enough) coworkers, decent upward mobility (stick around long enough and you'll rise the ranks).

    Cons

Work is boring, technology/systems are ancient and inefficient, bad name outside of real estate industry, bad location, below-average office quality, pay is poor, culture is "we do it this way because that's how we've always done it", if you know what I mean.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees - if you are so concerned about attracting and retaining talent, then PAY MORE and develop them professionally. Make the work more transferable and marketable on a resume.

I have been working at Freddie Mac full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Freddie benefits are really quite good. Lots of leave, good insurance/retirement packages and options, on-site gym, good about flexible scheduling if necessary or alternative work schedules, etc. etc. -Also, at least in the area I'm in, the work can be quite interesting. This depends a lot on the job.

    Cons

-Some uncertainty about the future. -Bureaucracy. Many meetings. Stagnant and uncaring bosses. Everyone is risk averse. Pushing for change for efficiency is greeted with quiet opposition rather than support. -The Multifamily division in particular has a sense that management pressure is driving the entire group to the very edge of risky and unethical. This filters throughout the entire division. -Also, the company seems to care more about the hours you work than the work you produce. In fact, measurement of output seems infrequent or nonexistent in many cases. -Finally, as with all jobs, the particular boss you get makes a HUGE difference in your job quality.

    Advice to Management

Push all management to focus on results instead of hours. Do a better job of weeding out mediocre middle managers.

I have been working at Freddie Mac full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Smart, friendly, genuinely nice people; interesting and challenging work; meaningful mission; ability to switch jobs within the company to learn new things; flexibility and work life balance (especially compared to other financial services companies); great benefits; great location; awesome fitness center and cafeteria

    Cons

It's a large company so promotions may be a little slower than at smaller firms.
