    Pros

Great experience to learn a new process. They send you to events to interact with other engineers and they pay well.

    Cons

Not so much the company's fault, but my mentor hung me out to dry. Luckily others filled in.

    Advice to Management

Allow some growth opportunities for operators.

I have been working at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Has a good knowledge base, is generally interested in developing their employees, pay is pretty good. Good work/life balance, flexible vacation policy.

    Cons

Have to live in a mining town, which isn't terribly great for single people. If you are from an urban area it can be jarring to transition to the remoteness of some locations. Workplace politics exists. Some assigned projects can be extremely rote and menial.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing with respect to hiring. Take some steps to tighten down frivolous expenditures and bring task priority across different divisions into better focus. Fighting over "turf" is not healthy.

    I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Pay, Good Benefits and ok schedule! When the Sx/Ew Plant was first started up they choose and hired the best in the industry and took care of their workforce Management at that time cared and showed and received the utmost respect.

    Cons

As the first year concluded management changed hands and then the work enviroment turned hostile and reclusive, Upper management let go of the reigns and then the click mantality took over and then backstabbing and childs play ensued, supervision had alot to be desired lots of unsatisfied exempt employees and it trickled to the non exempt workforce.

    Advice to Management

None to give i understand it is still the same if not worse! Management and the Company do not desire change!

    Pros

great pay, fulfilling job, learned much from peers. Definitely a challenging atmosphere. Was hired entry level, never having experience in this field

    Cons

If you are not in the "loop" when it comes time for layoffs, promotions, select crews or other 'perks' you are out of luck. its who you know there, not what you know.

    Advice to Management

Corporate, not senior management at the mine, should evaluate some of the people that are in senior management. Recommend a 'shake up' every few years, transferring to other departments/locations. While consistency is usually a good thing, in this department it created clicks that only hindered overall safe operations.

    Cons

Compensation has lagged th industry, Lack of feedback on performance. Exempt people treated very poorly. No communication.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so secretive with information that affects the workforce. Show more respect to exempt employees, they aren't slaves.

    Pros

They hire new engineers out of school and give them opportunity to start their career.

    Cons

This applies only for Phelps Dodge (before the buy out) 1. Insane management that mentally torments employees 2. Employees are forced to put in illegal long hours daily 3. Managers threaten and scream (really loud) at the employees 4. Managers snoop on the private life of the employees and use that to punish them at work 5. Incompetent management that takes lots of time off during the day for their private chores

    Advice to Management

There are many people who left Phelps Dodge because of the obstruction at work. Even HR did not help us. You must have higher power to control those tyrants.
