    Pros

Good pay and, for the most part, really nice people.

    Cons

Worst manager I have ever worked for in my life. Upper management is happy to ignore problems because they have no idea how to manage technical publications.
I was #9 in a long list of contractors hired to work for a micro-managing, lives in 80s technology, power-mongering B.

    Advice to Management

Never put a low-level manager under a middle manager who has no concept of what the low-level manager is doing.
And, for God sakes, if a department has gone through 9 contractors in the past 2 years, get a clue!

    Pros

Stable job. decent compensation. 5% 401k matching. 22 PTO for new hire (no sick days).

    Cons

No training for new hire. Some managers are people managers instead of technical managers. Can be political sometimes

    Advice to Management

Make sure middle management serves a role. Foster technical community instead of being so product driven.

    Pros

No pressure to respond to e-mails over the weekend. Free Coffee (Kurig). Good base salary.

    Cons

Ongoing "Silent" (not advertised) lay offs. too much of vertical organization mentality among workers. Little transparency in mgmt. communication

    Pros

Great, competent engineers to work with. You can learn much from some industry technical experts.

    Cons

Many of the great reasons to work at Freescale are dismantled. Unrealistic schedules, sub standard engineering compute environment. Common tasks take 2-10 times longer than they did 18 months ago after the upgrade.

    Advice to Management

You are moving backwards! Change gears and pull forward.

    Pros

they got new CEO so now the work is more aggressive. More products with competence coming out.

    Cons

They lay off people without any notice and that means disasters for H1Bs.

  8. Culture quickly going downhill despite the market results. A lot of politics and dishonesty. Some very poor managers.

    Pros

Could be great, but alas its not as good as it should be. I'm an good engineer and love being one. There is some great history here. Every now and then you will run across a real guru that's a great teacher. They are keeping their head down to survive.

    Cons

Some incompetents ended up in management after a lot of very talented people left due to the companies troubles over the last 10 years. They are now a liability. Sensors is a cancer factory, RF was great but inherited some of that cancer and is now beginning a decline. They are riding high because of China Telco build out but will be blood on the floor as it comes off. Working there can very difficult because some these people are simply unqualified. Just a lack of quality leadership across the divisions in Arizona. There is no mobility in this company. Internal opportunities do arise but they are all very junior - you basically need to apply for new jobs rather than transfer your job, and there is a lot of politics behind doors that stops that happening.

    Advice to Management

You need to sit down with your management teams CV's and decide whether these people are the ones you want on the bus. There's really no excuse for being a world class company, demanding world class engineers with degrees coming out of their rear end and then having managers who have basic unrelated degrees and don't know one end of a circuit from the other. People shouldn't and don't have to respect unnecessary cynical environments like that.

    Pros

The quality of the engineers is top-notch. Not a lot of big company nonsense. The right people get promoted. Wide variety of technology to work on. Lots of international employees makes life interesting. Financial performance has been excellent for the last two years. Balance sheet is improving rapidly after ridiculous LBO in '06.

    Cons

Some groups not as well run as others. You will work a lot. A lot of effort spent coordinating across the globe. Very international workforce. Layoffs and off-shoring are a reality.

    Advice to Management

Don't get complacent. Don't assume high-flying business groups will continue to pull insane revenues.

    Pros

The work culture is very encompassing and welcoming.
The senior members are more than happy to share their knowledge to the interns and new grads.
Training is impeccable and all resources needed are provided promptly.
And the HR team goes out of its way to make the interns feel welcomed.

    Cons

    None from an interns perspective.
The compensation however varies by a big factor for grad and under grad students.

    Pros

Decent benefits, vacation and 401K plan.

    Cons

No opportunities at all. If you are not an engineer in this company, then you are considered nothing. The managers couldn't manage their way out of an open paper bag. I had a manager tell me he didn't pay me to think (really). Their saying was we have always done it this way before so why change.

    Advice to Management

If this company expects to survive they need to be able to compete in a global environment. This means they will have to adjust their processes. Also they may want to look into doing a rotational program for business graduates, not just engineers.
