    Pros

Exposed to many different job sites, Given responsibilities at the start, very flexible with academic schedule, good people that care and want to mentor you.

    Cons

Not many opportunites to move up to other departments as of now (because of the economy).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people a better introduction from the field to those who work in the office in other departments.

Typical Small Civil Engineering Firm in tight market

Current Employee - Project Manager in Wall, NJ

I have been working at French and Parrello Associates PA

    Pros

Generous with regards to Home-life balance and flextime. People personable. Excellent and numerous support/administrative staff for size of company. This is typically an area where Civil Engineering firms are cheap.

    Cons

Current business climate has lead to layoffs, salary reductions and benefit reductions. Upper Management/Ownership almost all geotechnical engineers, not well-rounded in all civil engineering disciplines. Management obsessively focused on cash flow/billing over engineering excellence/quality. Must be billable 45 hours a week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Inablity of junior partners to generate cash flow to buy out original owners has staff concerned about future direction/opportunity especially given current business climate. There are jewels in company that have value, might be best for all involved if company sold.

The poor "management" may lead to the company's demise

I have been working at French and Parrello Associates PA

    Pros

Mr. French and Mr. Parrello. The original owners are the heart of what once was a "family" business; if only more managers could conduct themselves in the same manner F & P do.

The company is extremely flexible to employee time-off requests.

The staff-level employees are genuinely nice people and the office environment on good days is mellow.

    Cons

Too many cooks in the kitchen. French and Parrello have too many top managers with too many opinions, but at the same time many of the top managers barely seem to do much more than show up to work. The general opinion among staff employees of the firm are that some individuals that make up the Board of Directors are rude, arrogant, and unapproachable.

Often made to feel replaceable. Generally undervalued.

Due to the current work climate, annual reviews have been skipped.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Positive feedback is a powerful employee motivator.
Lose the egos. No one is superior.
    Morale?

    Pretty Nice place to work

    Current Employee - Administrative Assistant

I have been working at French and Parrello Associates PA

    Pros

Very understanding regarding Time-off Requests. Don't know about tuition reimbursement, as I did not pursue that option. Paid for professional memberships, licenses, notary, etc. C-level management seemed very approachable.

    Cons

Satellite offices are quiet and may be better suited to those who prefer not to be bothered while you work; those looking for lots of face-to-face interaction with coworkers would be better suited at the main office (120+ employees).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

give feedback that gives me a direction to move in: "you're doing great (example of greatness), can you work on X some more to bring it up to the same level?"
