    Pros

At the current time, pay cuts and salary freezes have been lifted, new job recruitments are always being conducted, and promotions are happening like I have never before seen in my ten years as a County of Fresno employee.

    Cons

Some unionized positions took hefty pay cuts a few years ago, additional steps have been added to many job classifications, and medical insurance costs have gone up.

    Advice to Management

More training opportunities and team building activities would be nice.

    Pros

The hardworking staff who genuinely cared about doing a good job. The rules were clear and easy to uphold and follow. The other departments respected those rules even if they didn't like them. There were challenges to meet the departments needs while staying within those rules and a lot of creative thinking.

    Cons

The managers were not good. You were treated differently depending on the manager. The managers talked about the employees and each other in a bad way. The expectation was to put in a lot of hours (over 8 hours per day), but if you were a minute late, you had to use your vacation time. And I worked in the personnel department. You would think they would know better.

    Advice to Management

Create a better culture that fosters good working relationships and rewarding employees rather than always using a stick to get what you want.

    Pros

ability to help the poor and destitute, decent wages when compared to some in private industry, health insurance, retirement

    Cons

Obama Care rules and regulations are ever changing, drowning in applications, no structure or definite answers for ACA.

    Advice to Management

We need strong leaders who are proficient in program. A BS does not a good supervisor make.

    Pros

    Great work-life balance. Steady paycheck.

    Cons

Obviously, an extremely bureaucratic environment. If you tend to think "outside the box" or are innovative, your creativity will be stifled. Typically, the best analysts are promoted to the worst managers.

    Advice to Management

Learn to manage human capital. The morale is beyond low and many people who have worked there for years tend to feel stuck and are reluctant to leave.

    Pros

Good benefits, although they have decreased significantly over the past 10 years. There are some good people working for the county. Good place to gain experience before moving on.

    Cons

Pay is very low when compared to other counties. Should be more focused on training and education.

    Advice to Management

Stop the brain drain and invest in the future with young qualified employees. Promote those that have potential.

    Pros

Good benefits and lots of annual leave once accrued.

    Cons

Low morale because employees are overworked and under-appreciated.

    Advice to Management

Talk to the employees and actually listen to their concerns.

    Pros

Generally, the people working in the parts of the organization that I worked in worked hard and had the best of intentions

    Cons

Systems tend to be disconnected, role clarity was inconsistent, work processes were not aligned well and well as having redundant and out dated processes.

    Advice to Management

I have to say it but, hire an organizational consultant to help management examine ways of working more effectively with the limited resources. Create safe dialogue face time with staff for emerging and utilizing the collective intelligence of your staff, as well as talking about the "elephants in the room" that people don't talk about.

    Pros

Great people to work with in this particular office, interesting job and just enough work - not too much or too little. Good benefits of leave hours.

    Cons

Moral is really, really low. Salary was cut 9% last year and another 4% this year for us, the lowest paid admin staff. After all the deductions, we are earning only about 2/3 the gross on paper - works out to just a bit above minimum wage. No promotions and fear of demotions or pink slips at regular intervals. Times are tough. The highest paid get the lowest salary cuts, or no cuts and instead, increases. Meanwhile us lower paid workers are finding it hard to survive.

    Advice to Management

Board of Supervisors and other managers should take at least equal percentage cuts as the lowest paid staff - that would save a LOT more to balance the budget!

    Pros

Great opportunity to learn and practice child protective services. Great opportunity to fine tune consumer relations, culturally sensitive, cultural brokering, and client advocacy skills. This Department provides good training in social work assessment, case planning, and permanency planning for individuals and families.

    Cons

Very difficult to express personal opinions and positions on social issues. Although knowledge and practice of social issues are required to provide efficient social work practice to consumers. (Last year with employer 2006).

    Advice to Management

Develop relationships with all employees, win their trust by remaining trustworthy. Continue providing excellent training and opportunities to all individuals regardless of ethnicity and cultural differences.
