I have been working at FrontRange Solutions full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I work out of the Colorado Springs, CO office and the people I work with here are amazing professionals. I love coming to work every day. We just moved to a new office with a new lease so the company is committed to maintaining our presence in CO. Company has an official standardized yearly performance review process with tied salary compensation. Company has competitive salaries based on industry and market levels. Facilities are nice and has nice perks like an expresso/latte machine. There are monthly social events and overall a friendly environment. Leadership has taken many steps over the past several years to both develop good market strategies as well as listen to both customer and employee feedback. Most employees are salaried so there is overall great personal freedom around schedules and time off. They have great benefits: health, dental, vision, pre-tax contributions, 401k, gym membership discounts, some tuition reimbursement. Company and leadership have a good employee recognition program.

    Cons

Overall office and company culture is a work in progress globally but seems to be moving in a good direction. Tenure ship at the company is very high so room for advancement can be limited in some areas as people do not leave, that is overall a good thing for companies and teams but can limit personal advancement opportunities. Company sales have been picking up so hope that will lead to additional head count and therefore more opportunities. Training opportunities outside of your immediate job requirements can be limited so you somewhat have to own that for yourself and not wait for management to provide it to you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue the proactive communication to employees around company strategy and vision. Ensure all business units organizational goals formally align with the company strategy and can be measured.

    Pros

An early pioneer in developing & selling Help Desk/ITSM solutions, organization is strictly focused on IT service delivery, inside culture has very good solution focus. Technology offerings, product stability are above industry average. Technical support of products is good. Extremely large customer install base if you count FrontRange’s Goldmine CRM offering.

    Cons

Unsustainable business model. Well over half of total annual revenue generated from maintenance/support contract renewals only. To maintain this support revenue stream, FrontRange actively support/sell five separate ITSM solution platforms Five flavors of ITSM each requiring separate support structures and licensing models. Vast majority of install base use old platform offerings, no service offered that can sensibly migrate customers to updated products; thus no product can be retired. Stagnant growth of pure software license/subscription revenues make constant rumors of FrontRange’s eventual sell-off by private equity owners believable. New CEO overspent on colorful rebranding and a needless corporate HQ relocation. High turnover in key executive positions. Weak relationships with market analysts. Within this ultra-competitive market (ITSM) space, FrontRange has evolved into a ‘me too’ vendor; missed its chance to stand above the crowd. Needed transition to reliable cloud subscription offerings brings additional financial challenges.

    Pros

Interesting metadata based technology platform and hybrid SaaS/premise product strategy. Consistently profitable, quarter after quarter. Very flexible telecommuting policy.

    Cons

Business is stagnant and not growing, which reduces career opportunities. Private equity owners continue to suck out every penny they can. High turnover and continuing bleeding of engineering talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to focus on top-line growth to create business expansion opportunities and career opportunities.

    Pros

Great products and talented staff. The Hybrid On-Premise/SaaS approach is great.

    Cons

Misaligned priorities. Executive leadership is constantly switching direction of company and does not convey goals and future of company. High turnover rate and employees are underappreciated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clearly communicate companies strategy and plans. Reward valuable employees more in order to retain great talent.
