I worked at Funcom full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Comfortable offices and working hours, but inflexible on scheduling (fixed shifts)

    Cons

Shared computers and poor communication about new policies; sometimes a policy was communicated to customer service a day after the problem occurred, so local managers were left to make decisions on how to respond to customer problems that were different from corporate policy communicated one day later

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase communication to the customer service department

    Pros

The company holds many team building events.

    Cons

Working alongside multiple teams in different countries while communicating via Skype and Email was a huge challenge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't have enough experience to advise a management board on how to better run their business.

    Pros

If you have a skills they find desirable like knowledge of a foreign language or QA or management skills this a good company to work for because they won't want to let you go.

    Cons

During the time I was there, about 2 months, management had three separate rounds of layoffs of CS folks with no language skills or low service numbers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a better product, one that works and doesn't require CS to get involved in predictably throughout the game experience.

I worked at Funcom full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I thoroughly enjoyed working at Funcom. The work is fun, management always went out of their way to provide great employee events, and the pay wasn't bad.

    Cons

Layoffs. Though The Secret World is a great game, the launch was horrid, the second bad MMO launch for the company within 4 years. Of course, it's the laid off employees that have suffered the most. Performance reviews were also non-existent after first 90 days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Marketing is horrid, not only with their abysmal promotion of TSW but also with communications to CS. CS Leads should have knowledge of any promotions at least a week in advance. We should not have been hearing about promotions on our first ticket of a shift.

I worked at Funcom full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Individual developers and customer service reps are (generally) good people, and have no qualms working as a team.
    Hard workers.

    Cons

It isn't until you deal with the management, and the decisions from Norway that you see where all these bad decisions are coming from and how they all link together..
Even working at the company, you can't shake the feeling that you're still on the outside, looking inside.
Bad Management across the board; funding, human resources, development decisions; you name it, it's there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to develop a video game for the US, and not just EU, you need to do your research and studies on how different the cultures and markets are. There is a clear disconnect between management, development, and customer desires/demands. Treat your employees like your own personal family; like you are directly related to them! Listen to their feedback, they know the markets better than you do!

    Pros

    Stress-free work environment, casual clothing,

    Cons

May let you go at any moment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Forecast. Think. Hire good people, pay them well and grow the company. Please stop having mass hiring periods, followed by mass lay-offs. But most importantly, keep competent people and do not promote the worst into senior positions.

I worked at Funcom full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Get to work in an awesome field on some really innovative products.

    Cons

Zero employee loyalty for their American branch. This is a Scandanavian-centric company that only needs Americans to get out the press and run customer support. They don't listen to their American staff and if they make a mistake there you will pay for it here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop rushing games to satisfy distributors! You cost a lot of people years of their lives working their way up in your company because you are too quick to release unfinished products. Take a page from Bethesda, Bioware, or Blizzard and test your product before you go to market.

I worked at Funcom full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to work if you value a creative environment, talented people, flexible work hours, free beer and it never being an issue to wear jeans to work, start at 10am and play counterstrike from time to time during work hours.

    Cons

Despite Norway having an official 37.5 hour work week, there was *Extreme* overtime (65 hrs per week!) which wasn't always compensated, generally poor pay, and although not Funcom's fault - Oslo is an extremely expensive city to live in. Poor management, smart-ass / know-it-all game producers and a general lack of direction didn't help the company's games suceed, despite there being many extremely talented people working on the games.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better direction is needed for less game failures. It is so frustrating to work on a great game only to see it fail! Why did you keep working on big budget multi-million dollar MMO games for so many years that, when competing with World of Warcraft, end up failing - whilst the mobile and iPad boom just passed you by?
