I have been working at G & W Electric Company full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This company is growing huge. The building is very new and has great ac and heat for the manufacturing floor which is very surprising and greatly appreciated. The 401k, health, dental, vision benefits are decent. In my opinion the best thing here is the people I work with. Coworkers are positive, smart, helpful, and caring. We are all here to better ourselves and finding mutual ground in that is easy.
Another great benefit is the profit sharing most people are pretty happy with how great that is increasing!

    Cons

In any working environment there's problems and here communication can be problematic.
Communication with shift changes is either little or non existent occasionally.
G and W has been implementing changes to improve upon this but more needs to be done

Parking can also be very difficult on shift changes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to understand and respond to problems in a more effective and more respectful manor.

The profit sharing is great, they are focused on safety, vision and dental, opportunities to grow if you want them, caring management, John Mueller is awesome!

Some politics, as you would get anywhere, the building is huge so everything is far away, traffic can be horrible since its right off 55.

    Cons

Lower wages, however they do profit sharing so it makes up for it.

It's a good place to work in a very bad economy.

I have been working at G & W Electric Company

    Pros

Steady employment with overtime available if wanted. Not a bad place to work. If you do your job and are to work on time management leaves you alone. Quarterly bonuses are something to look forward to.

    Cons

    1. Large Hispanic workforce. Very nice people to work with but they will speak Spanish every chance they get. It's very hard to learn a job from someone that has a poor command of the english language. Just from a safety standpoint management should make english the only language to be spoken in the factory.
    2. G&Ws starting pay is VERY low. The company is clearly taking advantage of the bad economy and the large unemployed workforce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please address number 1 and number 2 above. If the economy improves after the next presidential election (as I believe it will) you will lose a lot of good employees looking for better wages and benefits. Quarterly bonuses are nice but they don't make up for the low wages.

    Mechanical engineers are data pushers

Former Employee - Mechanical Engineer in Alsip, IL
Former Employee - Mechanical Engineer in Alsip, IL

    I worked at G & W Electric Company

    Pros

Support from other engineers, when they find time (everyone is super busy)
Database makes new designs a little simpler
Reviews are done on every project to ensure nothing is missed
drawing database organized and somewhat easy to access parts you need

    Cons

Management is super cheap. They will paint rusty office furniture to keep from buying new stuff. They also took away award pizza lunches even though engineering staff gives dozens of free overtime every week. They also charge employees for coffee, which is unheard of from any company. Seriously, who doesn't supply that for their employees??
your always behind on projects because engineer staff can't possibly keep up with workload
Your expected to come in on saturdays at least once a month (no choice)
Some of the senior staff on the shop floor know what they're doing, but there is a lot of unskilled labor that requires help from engineering staff on a regular basis when they should be spending time getting projects out

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Someone needs to go into the bottom depths of day to day operations and realize the way they are going things doesn't work, and that most of the engineering staff is really unhappy (though it seems like everyone puts up with it rather than finding work elsewhere)
