Pros
Every day is casual Friday! The fact that it is a small company means you should have a lot of opportunity to be involved in projects. Plus, the employees are really intelligent and fun to work with, even if the management is not. It's a great place to learn how to do things, because you will immediately be put in charge of various aspects of the company's management. There are some family-like aspects to the job - the managers' dogs run in and out of the office, as do their children. This can, however, be negative.
Cons
The managers do not seem to know what they are doing. They do not understand the technology that they are using. They do not have a clear plan for the company. They do not have a sufficient understanding of the field or legal rights within the field, and often their work borders on unethical. The office is based out of the personal home of the managers, and while this should be a plus for a more casual environment, there is no separation between the managers' homelives and the employees' space. The managers are secretive with information and seem to think that their employees are out to get them. Also, I felt I was mislead regarding the benefits package - only 50% of my health benefits are paid, and vacation is not accrued until you have been on the job for six months. Plus, you only get 5 days at that point. There is no regular feedback regarding compensation, job performance, or raises, and there is no schedule for any of these. The employees have very little trust in the abilities of the managers. Often times, management will leave the office area for hours at a time without informing the employees. In fact, management has been known to take vacations and not inform the employees until the day of, which gives the impression that the management does not care about what goes on. Management had little to no idea what job I was performing most of the time. The managers did not keep track of work done and forgot about project due dates most of the time. More responsibility could have been given to employees for tasks such as these, but the management opted to retain their rights. The managers appear disorganized and forgetful, and also spiteful without reason from time to time. If there is a plan for the company, they do not share it with their employees.
Advice to Senior Management
Trust your employees - you hired them to be intelligent, and they are. Admit that you don't know what you're when it's the case. Also, pay attention to what your employees are saying. They generally want the company to make money just as much as you do.
