Former Employee – worked at G4S full-time for more than 3 years

ProsG4S is a career oriented world wide company. Many of the comments here come as a result of misundersanding the security officer business as a whole. What the customer is willing to pay has to be worked back into wages, administrative fees, insurances, medical benefits, vacations and a plethora of other costs. The majority of that billing rate comes back to the hourly security officer leaving managers (former) like me to deal with the overhead expenses and overtime costs. There were officers who made more than me as a manager and that is because the customer was willing to pay for them. G4S is absolutely the best company in the world and I don't work there anymore.

ConsToo much daily crisis management brought on by Regional actors.

Advice to Senior ManagementVisit the Regions on a more frequent basis and get into the 'trenches' where the work is performed. Take what you hear or see on paper from GM's and RVP's with a grain of salt. Ask questions. Get answers

Wimbledon, England (UK)

Former Employee – worked at G4S as a contractor for less than a year

Pros2 weeks work at the beginning of the summer holidays with 12 hour shifts means that you don't have to work the whole summer to get money. They do provide lunch. You can also get other work for other events so you can top up with more money. If you get training your pay rate increases and returners automatically are paid more.

ConsThe management were disorganised and did not motivate workers as they tended to use Taylor style motivational techniques and micro-management. The uniform was often difficult to work in as the hats were uncomfortable (though were good for those who did not have access to shade) and the trousers and skirts were made of material that was either too thick or too thin and prone to gaining static electricity. Not good for people who like to be constantly busy as you go long spells without anything to do apart from look professional.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to treat workers like they are human beings and not merely a resource as that may help to motivate workers.

Manchester, England (UK)

Current Employee – been working at G4S full-time for more than a year

ProsA nice place to work depends on site and assignment. Meet some amazing people that make up your team. There is a relaxed approach to work and alot of the time just consists of keeping an eye on an office building

ConsWhen you start you will get the whole hoo haa of amazing support training and opportunities to move up in the company. these are basically so rare you are more likely to find a dinosaur in your garden. You have to push your manager to give you training courses, and the 24/7 call out expectation is rubbish

Advice to Senior Managementkeep on top of your workers, you have so many that have huge potential that is just drained away because of lack of training and opportunities to move up

Toronto, ON (Canada)

Current Employee – been working at G4S as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsEasily accepted without an interview!

ConsThis is for security guards :
1- pay you minimum wage in most locations
2- prmise you that you will have a permanent side easily , but you will work as a floater for a very long long time!
3- NO PAID HOLIDAYS FOR FLOATERS
4- NO PAID SICK LEAVE
5- NO PROTECTIVE BULLET PROOF VEST (BODY ARMOR ) or safety shoes
6- you will pay for your uniform !!plus their jacket will not let you feel warm enough in Toronto winter
7- no duty belt , or gloves , nor anything!
8- No respect for human rightts or working hours ( they will ask you to sign a waiver that allow them to let you work more than regular working hours, so you can not protect yourself or sue them !)
sometimes they ask you to work for 18 hrs / day , sometimes for only 4 hours , somedays you will not work at all !
9- Although they changed the term ( on call ) to a ( floater ) and you do not have regular hours, they will not allow you to have an annual leave even if your sister is dying and you ask to go and help her.

Their business is growing quickly cause they offer very cheap prices for corporations to take contracts from other companies, but security guards pay for that price

Advice to Senior ManagementHave some mercy on security guards they are human beings
