    Pros

Strong senior management. Company makes opportunistic investment during economic downturns. Stable company with little turnover.

    Cons

Mundane tasks; do the same thing over and over again without personal growth. Low to mid management are uneducated group of people who are trying to get ahead at peers' expenses.

    Advice to Management

Please consider introducing new technologies into your business model. Most of the processes that I witnessed during my employment at GATX was very labor intensive without the benefit of automation. Please hire some competent leaders.

    Pros

Good employee retention and favorable total compensation. In general employees act as good teammates and the business is efficiently run.

    Cons

Lack of growth and new opportunities. Very risk adverse and many times backwards and stubborn in its approach. the company is comfortable and good at what it does, but has trouble with new ideas and expansion.

    Pros

Extremely flexible to workers needs. The bonuses are fair to the point they pay out at a rate equivalent to their expected earnings. If they do 115% of their quota, they pay out 115% of your expected bonus! Great benefits and vacation time.

    Cons

The job is very "old school" shouting and arguing is not uncommon. Refusal by most to move into the 21st century, both technological and mentality. The pay is alright, not so bad to complain but not the best either. Nothing is more important than "time on car" you will get yelled at for working "overhead" then get yelled at because the "overhead" is not getting done, I imagine they expect a person to stay after their work day and on their own time perform the over head of the shop no charge to the customer or company. If you can't weld, you are looked down upon as a lesser employee.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, some may be disgruntled on a daily basis because they dislike the daily grind, others may be disgruntled with a root reason that you can solve.

    Pros

Pay is fair and comparable to what you would find elsewhere. Benefits and retirement plans are generally excellent. Employee culture is generally friendly and relaxed.

    Cons

Very little promotion from within. No real mechanisms seem to exist at the company to move from a lower position into management. Almost all senior hiring seems to come from outside companies and often outside industries.

    Advice to Management

Create more middle management positions to allow employees to gain managerial experience within the company. Refrain from bringing in managers from outside industries who don't understand the particular challenges that come with GATX's industry.

    Pros

Very good benefits and stable company.

    Cons

Many people have been in their position for a significant period of time. Some old-school management styles (i.e. yelling, screaming, belittling). Could use better diversity.

    Advice to Management

Keep things fresher, listen to the people and nip issues in the bud instead of letting them fester.

    Pros

Good benefits, decent corporate culture, recent push to provide training and more career opportunities after employee survey. So management is trying to listen to what employees want.

    Cons

Some people are very old school and have a "clock in clock out" mentality.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so conservative in growing the company. Investors are a good check but you know your business better than they do. Lead, don't follow.

    Pros

This company really takes care of their employees, giving good bonuses when the company target revenues are hit, offering incentives to stay healthy, and ample opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community. It's a very positive place to work, where you will be known and befriended by others and are not just a number.

    Cons

Many people stick with this company until retirement because it is such a good employer, this only drawback with that is the median age range is not exactly youthful. Younger hires are beginning to come in, but the work/social balance may leave something to be desired if you are looking for that.

  10. Great work like balance, but sacrifice the pay to get it.

I have been working at GATX

    Pros

Work life balance is the best reason to work for GATX and probably the second best reason is the type of people you would work with.

    Cons

The compensation and career advancement opportunities are limited at GATX. GATX operates in a mature market and rail is the main component of its business.

    Pros

I guess there are alot of fun events that the company puts on, but many times they are only for management. The benefits are pretty good. Salary is average unless you are managment. The business is not flashy but it is interesting and vital to the economy, You can learn a lot from people in the organization. The are plenty of lifers here so there must be something good. August hours are cool. Everyone is generally friendly, The new office space is outstanding. There is a lot of leeway with many jobs. Senior Management is very accessible especially Kenney. The others are fair also.

    Cons

Opportunites are few and none. Kenney tries his best but he is a very moody boss. The HR department is totally incompetent. There are so many IT people running around it is unbelievable. They have initiated multiple computer enhancements with none coming to fruition. Sales and management are extremely well compensated but regular employees have a hard time getting more than a 3% bonus. There are a lot kiss ups and not much diversity. I imagine they try but there are a lot ethnic and racial cliques. The one charity that is sponsored is not very varied and seems just to garner media attention.

    Advice to Management

Spend time with your underlings. Realize that many of your yes man are basically full of bs.
