    Pros

    Very good benefits and stable company.

    Cons

    Many people have been in their position for a significant period of time. Some old-school management styles (i.e. yelling, screaming, belittling). Could use better diversity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep things fresher, listen to the people and nip issues in the bud instead of letting them fester.

    Pros

    Good benefits, decent corporate culture, recent push to provide training and more career opportunities after employee survey. So management is trying to listen to what employees want.

    Cons

    Some people are very old school and have a "clock in clock out" mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't be so conservative in growing the company. Investors are a good check but you know your business better than they do. Lead, don't follow.

    Very nice people to work with but poor management of projects and chaotic work environment

    I worked at GATX as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

    -People are very nice and friendly to work with
    -Good work hours 9 to 5

    Cons

    -Minimal to lack of definition and management of project scope, resulting in a chaotic work environment, inefficient use of resources, and issues that occur later
    -When there is one large project for the company, all other projects suffer due to limited resources
    -"Band-aid" IT solutions are in place instead of investing extra time and money to implement solutions that address both short and long term needs
    -Unless it is an enterprise wide project, Directors are made project managers who spend very little time actually managing the project
    -Enterprise data warehouse is not widely used and there is limited support to expand.
    -Inexperienced people in middle management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    -Do a better job managing the project pipeline and changes to the pipeline through the year.
    --->Implement and enforce a process to handle projects requested by the business that were not on the approved list for the year.
    --->When unplanned projects are accepted, revisit/revise list of projects for the year and/or increase staff/consultants accordingly.
    -Put trained and experienced people in project management positions, not just making a side job for a Director.
    -Make project managers accountable - Measure them on project budget vs actuals (this should give more incentive to manage scope)
    -Make sure people are well trained to handle new roles - especially when new to middle management.

    I have been working at GATX full-time

    Pros

    This company really takes care of their employees, giving good bonuses when the company target revenues are hit, offering incentives to stay healthy, and ample opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community. It's a very positive place to work, where you will be known and befriended by others and are not just a number.

    Cons

    Many people stick with this company until retirement because it is such a good employer, this only drawback with that is the median age range is not exactly youthful. Younger hires are beginning to come in, but the work/social balance may leave something to be desired if you are looking for that.

    company should give opportunity to the staff to express what his / her feels when u listen give time and monitor what is right instead of discussing it with the immediate boss. In India the boss is powerful to manipulate and misuse the weaker ones.

    Pros

    Stable organization. If your goal is to find a "job" and make a decent living, this organization may suit you well. Top executives of this organizationis ultra conservative and do not take unnecessary risks.

    Cons

    Stagnant organization. You will not be technically nor academically challenged. For the most part, you do the same thing over and over again. You would be surrounded by whole bunch of uneducated people who are trying to maintain status quo and get ahead at the expense of other people. Good old boy organization. Do a search on top executives and see if any diversity exists in this organization.

    Where is the growth on this organization? Please review your own 20 year chart of your own stock and perform a self assesment.

    I have been working at GATX

    Pros

    I guess there are alot of fun events that the company puts on, but many times they are only for management. The benefits are pretty good. Salary is average unless you are managment. The business is not flashy but it is interesting and vital to the economy, You can learn a lot from people in the organization. The are plenty of lifers here so there must be something good. August hours are cool. Everyone is generally friendly, The new office space is outstanding. There is a lot of leeway with many jobs. Senior Management is very accessible especially Kenney. The others are fair also.

    Cons

    Opportunites are few and none. Kenney tries his best but he is a very moody boss. The HR department is totally incompetent. There are so many IT people running around it is unbelievable. They have initiated multiple computer enhancements with none coming to fruition. Sales and management are extremely well compensated but regular employees have a hard time getting more than a 3% bonus. There are a lot kiss ups and not much diversity. I imagine they try but there are a lot ethnic and racial cliques. The one charity that is sponsored is not very varied and seems just to garner media attention.

    Spend time with your underlings. Realize that many of your yes man are basically full of bs.
