I have been working at GE full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting design and manufacturing challenges to solve. Good pay and benefits. Good flex time and vacation time.

    Cons

Lot's of red tape involved in all the systems and processes that can be a pain to work through.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know the company is always talking about simplifying things, but they often make it worse. If I.T. help was improved and you could easy have an I.T. person walk over to your desk and help you navigate all of the computer systems which are always changing, that would be so helpful.

I have been working at GE full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Many opportunities through all the businesses GE owns. Work life balance is made to accommodate you. Able to get global experience.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic and slow moving. Bogged down by processes that don't have a clear value. Too much working in power points.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need to be more nimble.

I worked at GE as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

-Good salary for the low levels of responsibility.
-Can be a great environment if you're on the right team.
-Schenectady is rapidly becoming a very nice town.
-Contractors can't have assignments longer than 1 year, with little room for extension. But they do a really good job of finding full time positions after that 1 year assignment. I thought of it as an extended interview.

    Cons

-Bureaucracy is insane. For example, I counted the number of people required to make a simple purchase: 13.
-The organizational structure is very hierarchical. There are way too many managers and it is very segmented. Communication between groups is between managers, not the people who are actually going to be doing the work. Micromanagement runs rampant.
-More time in meetings than doing real work.
-Not a good team environment. For example, one manager "saved" the company by removing a part that cost $x. The change required my group to add a $2x part to meet spec. When we confronted him about it, he told us he wasn't measured by how much he cost us.
-No benefits for contractors. They took all the employees to the horse track in Saratoga for a day. We were told to stay at the office and work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the way! You hire very talented people. They will move mountains for you if you let them work.

I worked at GE full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Big company with great opportunities for advancement, strong benefits and pay, and good management. Always a challenge if you want to take it. Great place to start right out of college. Company has excellent training programs.

    Cons

There is lots of competition for management positions, so need to really work hard to stand out. Can easily get engulfed in GE family and loose contact with outsider.

I have been working at GE as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Culture is to make things work and make progress. GE believes that new technoloy and latents are most important to change the world and make people's life better.

    Cons

TIme-off policies are reasonable, Benefits are different, depending on what department you work for. Maybe for nonprofit generating department, benefits should be higer.
