    I worked at GE Aviation

    Pros

    - Competitive Pay
    - Flexible Schedules
    - Interesting Work
    - Huge Plant (not just engineering but also manufacturing is incredible at this location)
-Good exposure to different aspects of the business

    Cons

Because it is a big company, tends to be a lot of red tape and procedure involved with getting anything substantial done. Can feel like your hands are tied a lot of the time.

I worked at GE Aviation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

GE Aviation offers a great possible breadth of work experience and internal training
GE has tuition reimbursement for higher degrees
The workplace is generally a meritocracy, with nearly all employees interested in doing their jobs well
For a design engineer, there are a broad array of challenging parts that need to be designed

    Cons

Department determines what type of work you get, there are good and bad departments
Company has a huge amount of bureaucracy and some double work (engineers and drafters both make models)
Workload is program dependent and management often puts in too short of a schedule, making it engineering's problem
Crushing hours on some new product programs, 80-90 hrs/week at times with no bonuses or appreciation for exceptional effort
Evendale, OH and Lynn, MA employees are compensated the same amount (cost of living much higher in Boston)
Management stresses cost and schedule deliverable but does not place emphasis on employee development or job satisfaction

I view GE as a very good place to work, but one needs to be very proactive. GE would be glad to pay you minimum wage and have you grind away on work at your desk, never giving you a higher title or significantly higher pay. If you work there you need to be actively seeking out your next position which will challenge you more than your current position. Otherwise you will get defaulted into the same role and no development, and have too much work put on your shoulders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on developing and rotating employees more.
Identify what will keep employees working at GE, and focus on keeping them challenged and on a development path.

    Pros

GE Aviation has a great co-op/intern program with lots of opportunities for networking and a great support system. I was quickly trained and given plenty of responsibility.

    Cons

There was a lot of red tape in terms of onboarding (including getting set up on the computers and network). Site is large, which means lots of time wasted walking from building to building.

I worked at GE Aviation as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I had exposure to the real products that were produced and opportunities to see other parts of the business and the processes for ensuring conformance to strict parameters.

    Cons

The site has a majority of union workers and is very dependent on their cooperation. There is tension between the engineering management and the union workers - there is no balance of trying to work harder and being recognized.

Former Employee - Performance Engineer in Lynn, MA

I worked at GE Aviation full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

+Industry-leading benefits. I almost believe they treat their employees too well!
+GE is a household name, and GE Aviation credentials look great on a resume.
+Managers care for your career and work with HR to lay out a plan for your advancement.
+You have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology and interact with worldwide customers.
+GE will often allow for flexible work arrangements or even working from home and telecommuting on occasion.

    Cons

-Customer focus is not all it could be. Being one of the biggest names in Aerospace comes with a sense of complacency.
-Working with a unionized shop is incredibly frustrating.
-The Edison program gives new hires a good chance to get exposed to many types of work, but it is difficult to get anything meaningful done during rotations.
-There is some deadwood in the organization, and incompetent Engineers are often passed around or left alone rather than encouraged to seek employment elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Scrutinize the Edison program to make sure that you're hiring quality engineers. It's easier to weed out the deadwood early before it takes root. Weeding out long-term under-performers is bad for morale, but getting rid of them early and showing that you are committed to bringing in the cream of the crop is a boost to permanent employees.

Focus on the customer. Employees should be willing to work late or off-hours to get products out the door to save the customer money. Eventually someone else will come along and challenge GE's dominance if the company doesn't stay focused on delighting customers.

I worked at GE Aviation as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Overall a very good 6 month experience
Worked as an intern - many opportunities for assignments across the US
Large company so many opportunities for different roles as an intern
Get a taste of navigating a very large organization
Got an interesting perspective of Union v. Management relationships

    Cons

Size of organization makes changes and getting follow up difficult
Worked in shop/operations environment - highlighted conflicting goals/incentives between functions - created hostile relationships occasionally
Union Shops - Saw direct supervisors/management suffer as a result of Union policies

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep the intern program going.

GE Aviation redefines bi-polar when it comes to senior leadership qualities.

    • Career Opportunities
Current Employee - Engineer in Lynn, MA
Current Employee - Engineer in Lynn, MA

I have been working at GE Aviation full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

GE Aviation can offer some of the greatest technical challenges to engineers that want to grow technically and grow in leadership qualities.

    Cons

GE Aviation continues to participate in the initiative of the year club. Every day you go into work you never know what crazy initiative management will force you into next. Decisions are made without a foundation of common sense and management simply expects the work force to work thru the bad decisions made.

Health Benefits are pathetic for a company of this size.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the business more and less on metrics that you haven't a clue how to analyze and utilize. You want the business to run lean and mean and yet you add foolish metric initiatives that are never used to improve efficiencies or systems.
