Former Employee - Manager in London, England (UK)

I worked at GE Capital full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent leadership training; opportunities to move geographically and across businesses
Constantly challenging status quo; high calibre of employees; strong brand
Strong functional areas (finance, HR, risk etc.); HR process for annual reviews robust
Strong focus on integrity and compliance
Better opportunities for promotions on the industrial side

    Cons

Very risk averse, too many internal processes and internal initiatives stiffling innovation
Difficult environment for people in sales jobs, lots of pressure from senior management
Too much focus on risk and finance...not enough focus on customers
No real long term strategy within GE Capital...very much focused on short term goals

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce level of complexity, eliminate unnecessary processes, focus more on customers and external world, empower sales people, clarify future of GE Capital...or spin it off

Current Employee - Senior Financial Analyst in London, England (UK)

I have been working at GE Capital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

A company with a great work culture of openness, integrity and collaboration. The relatively new drive for simplification acknowledges that the company has become overburdened with processes and needs to become leaner, so hopefully that will bring a positive change.

    Cons

The processes are often very bureaucratic and there have been a multiplication of them after the crises to ensure everyone reviews and approves everything, so the employees don't feel much empowered to do what they're supposed to be doing without 20 people looking at it.

Very powerful HR function that can help or hinder progress of employees. If you're lucky to have a good HR leader capable of recognizing and developing talent, then try growing in the company. Otherwise, don't waste more time than necessary to master your role and certainly don't try breaching the wall of ignorance and lack of helpfulness - it just is not worth it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR function should either become a SUPPORTING function or managers should be trained to stand-up for their employees to avoid losing talent across the company.

I have been working at GE Capital as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Exposure...responsibility...socials...reporting...growth for people who have a passion for finance

    Cons

No onboarding / support unless joining the management program. Long hours (10-11 hrs) expected

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer to support to new starters, management otherwise do not always have capacity to care about progess. Opportunity to provide anonymous feedback is also important,

I have been working at GE Capital full-time

    Pros

people integrity, decent work life balance, smart people, inspiring business leaders

    Cons

Politics can be annoying, like many big companies.. Management can be sometimes risk adverse. GE Capital outsourced IT way too much in the 2000s because it was not "core business", and now trying to catch up on IT skills because software is eating the world.

I worked at GE Capital as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Exposed to latest IT technology and had access to great developers with lots of experience. I also had a great project manager who was very effective at insulating the team from internal political issues.

    Cons

Technical team had a very busy back office, so you could sometimes feel anonymous. The company tried to compensate by organizing team building / bonding events, such as go cart racing + dinner at companies expense. Made us contractors feel valued members of the tech team !
