Pros
The people there are great. People are very helpful and friendly. The career development opportunities are plenty as long as you have a plan for yourself instead of waiting for others to plan it for you. The location is good, too. Charlottesville is a quite and beautiful town, where University of Virginia is located. GE has great benefits such as tuition reimbursement. Many employees are taking courses from UVa.
Cons
When the economy is down, the business starts to treat employees as numbers. Cut off around 30~40% of engineers from 2008 to 2010. Used laying off employees to pay for the losses caused by the bad management and bad project planning.
Advice to Senior Management
The people working there are the greatest fortune of GE Fanuc. If you don't even provide job security to your top talents, how do you expect to retain talents when the economy gets better?!
Pros
Better than average pay. You can easily slack and not work much, people were fun too
Cons
too much bureaucracy, hard to move up fast, boring job
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure your employees are working when they should and provide more incentives
Pros
GE Fanuc may be one of the smaller players within the controls industry but it has allowed me to grow our business in the territory that I am in. Compared to the feedeback I have had of our competitors, we are more flexible in the way we conduct our business and compared to the feedback that I have had of our other GE counterpart businesses, we are certainly more customer responsive.
Cons
Compared to the other bigger control companies, our hardware products may not have as comprehensive a line as theirs, but we have our niche. Also, I think we could do with more resources as some of us are overstretched.
Advice to Senior Management
Our software products are excellent but we lack the resources to make a difference in the market.
Pros
Great place to get your Six Sigma training and certification. If you can be successful at GE, you can be successful in any company, in any industry. .
Cons
GE as a company is struggling financially, and if the GE division you are in is not an industry leader, it will be sold and you will be booted to the curb.
Advice to Senior Management
Bring back Jack Welch
Pros
Good work life balance. Leading edge technologies and fast paced environment
Cons
Limited opportunity for career growth. Also limited opportunities for mentorship. There are too many isolated sites as a result of aquisitions and there is very little communication between the sites. Furthermore, management is very entrenched and presents few opportunities for career development. I think there needs to be an infusion of new ideas and a more clearly defined direction to target bigger more lucrative markets. Currently there seems to be very little forsight and product planning needed to steer the company towards the right markets. Also GE automation contributes about 1% to GE's bottom line and is very vulnerable to shuffling or company re-org.
Advice to Senior Management
Re-structuring needed and flat management model needs modification.
Pros
It is a good place to learn the processes and how to do work in an organized way. The people here are nice and very helping. Lot of employees work on flexible schedules and the employer is very accommodating of this - good work/life balance.
Cons
The only thing lacking is compensation and benefits. Even if you are a top performer, you will see your salary only equal to (or less than) the market average. Very difficult to survive in cities where cost of living is high... Also bonus is none and rewards are scarce.
Advice to Senior Management
The compensation and rewards structure should be improved to boost employee morale.
