Small time company because of big time CEO ego

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Prosthis company had possibilities and did show growth for several years. There are some very good people there.

ConsEntire culture is driven by ego of its CEO and all employees cater and kow tow to him. It is a sick environment and the culture is as close to a dictatorship as it can be The company has underperformed recently and apparently has no answers to remedy its plight

every employee is aware of the fickleness of the CEO and just tires to keep their heads down and stay out of his cross hairs.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a new CEO.

Generally a good place to work.

    Procurement (Former Employee)

ProsGood pay and flexible works schedules, The office environment was very professional and the people were generally good to work with.

ConsTheir business is currently unstable and therefore, so is employment. When I left, the workload was heavy and getting even heavier with layoffs. They need a turnaround in customer orders.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstability of the salesforce does not instill trust in your customers.

    Generally good place to work

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsRelatively stress-free environment. Engineers are treated fairly well. Presence of knowledgable coworkers. Fun projects to work on. New customer wins seem to be fairly frequent. New challenges keep you motivated. Respectful of work/life issues.

ConsThe layoffs are demoralizing. There is more work load due to less staff. Unsure about the direction of the company. Salaries are stagnant with no hope in sight. No/little organic growth - growth primarily due to acquisitions.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more open with employees about where we're headed, especially after having so many layoffs. Be a little more humble and less arrogant. Prove that you can take what we have now and make it work for the company rather than just acquiring other companies.

    Mis management

    Product Support (Current Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsGenband bought out Nortel's VoIP unit and Salaries are same as Nortel's

ConsThey keep laying off people since taking over Nortel when the return on investment does not meet a target.

Advice to Senior ManagementSmart up and keep the best people

Lots of potential, buried in leftover bureaucracy and culture conflicts

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSalaries are getting more aligned with market, good people trying their best to make great products and power through introduced impediments.

ConsDifficult to do your job - procurement is very challenging, requirements and project objectives for various projects are unclear and frequently changing - lots of resources (time and effort) wasted on directional changes. Outsourcing model creates significant conflicts between time zones and introduces communication challenges. Cost accounting doesn't properly reflect the actual cost of moving work offshore.

Advice to Senior ManagementSimplify procurement of resources, push decision making to lowest level, enable teams to truly solve problems and take action, and align the Product Management and R&D primes on priorities - endlessly asking for projects that cannot be fulfilled when you have used all of your available resources on priorities indicates that either our priorities are not well-defined, or that there is simply an unwillingness to trust your teams. Lack of trust is a significant issue. Point the direction and then let your teams move.

    Very Difficult Work Enviornment

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsGenband customers and fellow employees

Cons1) Growth through acquisition of companies with marginal profitability followed by judicious layoffs to maintain overall financials of Genband: job insecurity and turnover.

Advice to Senior Management1) Reduce discretionary spending on lavish off site meetings like Bora Bora and the session this year in Scottsdale as this directly impacts the bottom line (2) Encourage sales and product dev. to promote non-proprietary solutions (3) Improve employee retention with emphasis on customer-facing roles (4) Refresh management positions with candidates having non-Nortel backgrounds (5) flatten the organization through elimination of unecessary management levels (6) All of these behaviors must be driven from the top!

    Not so good

    Support Engineer (Current Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsGood compensation relative to the market
Some very capable first level managers
Freedom and flexibility to work from home when needed

ConsLack of vision, no long term strategy for successfully growing the company
No organic growth; growth seems to only come from M&A
Employees are not empowered to make decisions

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop a clear focus to grow the company and communicate it to employees. Empower employees. You have a very strong and experienced set of engineers, use them.

Disapointing knee jerk reactions to market events.

    Senior Test Engineer (Current Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsSalary is very competitive and lower level management do a great job.

ConsNo security, no clear direction and an ever increasing pool of executives....

Advice to Senior ManagementThink long and hard about the "REAL" cost of sending jobs off-shore.

Typical modern day IT Sweatshop, Brutal

    Software Development (Former Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsPay and benefits and technical talent around you are positive. There are lots of great people trying to succeed at the lower levels.

ConsSweatshop, extremely political environment. Very short sighted management team and direction. Direction and vision are unclear and therefore impossible to implement efficiently. Staff reductions are frequent and all management practices are "territorial" and guarded. There is no spirit of honest teamwork to all move in the same direction together. Management is old school fear based and nothing at all is progressive or innovative.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour success will be directly tied to the positive motivation of the people that do the work. If you treat your employees great, they will do great work for you. There is no longer loyalty by default in this industry. You must engage and empower your employees in a positive manner. Get rid of old school fear based management philosophies and modernize your management team and style with professionals that know how to manage (not just whomever promoted to be managers and directors). Management and Leadership is a skill and talent that is sorely lacking at Genband.
