I worked at GENEX Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Steady work, steady pay with benefits. Overtime was approved if justified. Location was good and the luncheonette always made good meals at reasonable prices. Had choice for an hour lunch with no 15 min breaks or 1/2 hour lunch with 2 15 min breaks. They actually gave you a "choice."

    Cons

Internal struggle with keeping managers and supervisors in the Medical Bill Review Department. The problem became so intense that they had to close down the Medical Bill Review Dept. entirely and move all operations to another location and made no offers to anyone to see if they would like to work in another department.

    Advice to Management

Call back the innocent workers that were let go without warning by no reason of their own and allow them to be interviewed for the same department that now exists at the Wayne location or have us apply for another job at a different department.

    Pros

Wide variety of injury types and treatment which keeps the job interesting, not that you ever have time to read up on new treatment or education. So never mind, no pros at all here

    Cons

Corporate seems to implement changes daily and the focus is on billing via reports and "billable hours." Billable hours do not correlate with real time case managers spending working files therefor meeting billing goals is almost impossible. "Inventive" is overtime and very poorly paid at that because if you do get it they label most as travel time with way less payout. Case managers often take PTO in order to chart and write reports and then are working files while on PTO. Expectations are to work out in the field 8-5:30 and then chart or write reports in your free time. Weekends are the new trend and all deadlines disregard business hours or business days. Reports take hours to configure and they change monthly. Customer guidelines are are individual and usually not up to date making it impossible for a case manager to perfect her crash or ever be knowledgable regarding customer preferences, preferred networks, and billing limits. IT support is nonexistent and no helpful. They take days to reapond and are not available promptly after hours. The networks kick you out of the charting system which makes very stressful, difficult, and time sensitive computer work (after 8-10 hrs in the field) impossible to do.

    Advice to Management

Job shadow your case managers!!!You will make more money by making work more efficient and easier for the field workers. Provide more pto as 14 days a year die sick and vacation is a joke! This will decrease burn out and turn over, reducing money you spend in recruiting new hires and on orientations. Get a new charting system or at least compatible systsems and networks. Hire nurse consultants at every branch to work with your IT department so we can finally explain to them we are expected to meet all report deadlines with computers that only work half the time!!! It's ok to be all about the money and all business no heart but you have to have the technology to back it up and you've got to allow for days off, truly off, or the Burn out will continue to cause negative attitudes which will severly impact your revenue and referrals! Most importantly- pay time and a half for overtime and stop calling it Incentive. It's noninventive when you kill yourself to make it and it's a measly 3$ more an he or 12$/hr for travel time! An evil joke

    Pros

    Not sure at this point.

    Cons

PTO - are you kidding.....you are encouraged to take all of your PTO during the year or lose it by Jan 15.
So you take the time to take it but during that time you are to complete all due reports, follow up on all calls, speak with CM's who are covering for you while they are trying to do their own work, follow up on the referrals you receive during your time off. I know that the response is that is not true but consider the Q&A for the timing your responses on your new referrals and older cases and consider bonus timing. If you don't hit your markers, then no bonus even though you have more than your hours at the end of the month. then if you take PTO towards the end of the month, you can't even enjoy it for all the due dates for reports. All the emails telling you to complete reports etc.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider what is happening here. There has got to be a better way. You are losing good experienced senior people who don't want the stress of this and feel that case management has fallen by the wayside for the "numbers". AND for gods sake remember that your money people are your seasoned case managers who are the most reliable and loyal employees that you will every have. They bring in the money and without them you are nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bosses call you while on PTO. REPORTS HAVE TO BE DONE twice a month on clients that are not 30 day carriers. Bill, bill, and more bill. Maintain you CCM but we dint give you days to go to conferences.

Give something to the nurses that making you money. 13 vacation days a year is pathetic. We are burned out and getting fed up.

    Pros

    None that come to mind.

    Cons

Push for billing. Pay is not good. Expected to drive and attend appointments all day. Then, work all night and weekends to get billing in and reports done for threshold days. When you add up the hours worked compared to what is allowed to bill, a case manger barely makes minimum wage. Unable to take care of yourself or attend doctor appointments due to expected work load. Case managers may work for 24 hours or longer without sleep to get billing in and reports done. Stress level is astronomical. Sales marketing has no clue what case managers do. They promise things to companies that are not reasonable and add pressure to case managers all to get contracts. Company promises work comp insurance carriers report formats that take 2 to 3 hours to do and you can only charge .5 for the report. GENEX also allows work comp insurance carriers to dictate their own individual report formats be used which makes it difficult for the case manager to follow so may formats which adds to the time to do reports. The computer system is slow and there is always issues which makes it even harder to do the job in a timely manner. Supervisor is always on your butt to get more billable hours, threatening you, writing you up, so they can make their unreasonable goals to make their bonuses. It is difficult to make case manager bonuses. You are expected to pad billing to make hours. There are so many cons to this company. Benefits are not good. Case managers are expected to know each company's special instruction/ billing guidelines which are neither up-to-date or non existent when you pull them up in system. Genex basically sells out their case managers to companies with unreasonable expectations because they basically have no clue as to what case managers have to do out in the field. No raises or very low raises. In 6 years, only make $1.00 more an hour than when first hired. No personal life because of expectations in getting billing in. Working for Genex is bad for your health and will eventually affect your health in a bad way due to the stress of making billing and working long hours. A case manager can only charge for time worked that Genex sales marketing contracted with insurance carrier no matter how long it takes to do the job. There are days when a case manager may work an 8 hour day and can only charge for about an hour. Where is the fairness in that? Ridiculous. I would rate this company a zero; however, that option is not available.

    Advice to Management

Genex should be concerned about their case managers. They should not promise things to insurance carriers without knowing what it takes for a case manager to meet those expectations. Genex needs to take care of the case managers who make this company and are out there representing Genex. Case managers are the face of the company because without the case manager's ability to work with the work comp carriers Genex would not have a company.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

    - Management buys you lunch on end of the month
    - Some of the case managers are pretty awesome
    - Sometimes will let you work from home if there is inclement weather (hours after management leaves to "see if the roads are okay")
    - The work itself isn't too stressful and unless it is a threshold day you get to leave at 5:00
    - Accommodating to illness

    Cons

    - No overtime allowed, but clerical staff is forced to work late on threshold days without compensation...which is illegal
    - Management set unrealistic expectations
    - Very little training
    - Small or nonexistent pay raises
    - Cannot even bring in a lunch bag/box or tote bag, management thinks you might steal something (what, pens?)
    - Clerical staff always has to bend over backwards to do things for the Nurse Case Managers, things that they should be doing, and gets no appreciation for it
    - Very difficult to get in touch with HR or IT
    - Corporate only cares about money, not employee relations or morale
    - Staff constantly belittled in front of visitors and new case managers

    Advice to Management

Conduct exit interviews with departing employees and really listen. If you notice a trend of the entire branch leaving within a year except one person you might want to take note.
