    Pros

Great team-based work atmosphere. Heavy focus on professional development for entry level engineers, and the youth professionals program encourages interaction outside the workplace. The company has a lot of future potential and is rapidly developing in presence in North America.

    Cons

The current merger with CRA has been a huge distraction, with a lot of uncertainties at every step of the way. The bonus program is structured based on the performance of your whole operating center, instead of an individual office level. Do not count on a significant bonus, and your salary will not be stellar.

I have been working at GHD full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay and above average benefits. I work out of a remote office that was bought out by GHD a few years ago, so it still has that small company feel.

    Cons

Some projects involve way too many engineers from multiple states and/or offices. It's hard to get them to make a timely decision on issues encountered in the field. It can take weeks to get an answer on trivial things that could have been worked out locally and in a few minutes. The management structure is complicated, it's hard to tell who's in-charge of what. Also, GHD has too many acronyms for things, if you work here you know what I'm talking about!

    Cons

It is hard to get leadership involved with regular project tasking. But, peer review is readily available and compitent.

    Pros

    Great people and team players.

    Cons

Managment Oversold Opportunity, Company doesn't have bandwidth to support growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to evaluate business units relative to the business functions of GHD. Departments with un-qualified staffing must partner to meet the needs of the normal job functions.

I have been working at GHD full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not on the stock exchange like other large Engineering firms.

    Cons

Top heavy management, and those sitting at the top "managing" don't even know how to manage. Lots of money spent on marketing, business development, and extra paper work with absolutely no results whatsoever. Those who are pulling in the work/money are the project engineers and technical staff, only to see it wasted by overhead and promotional knick-knacks, and extra admin time from all the extra forms we have to fill. The engineers/technical staff work extremely hard (50-60 hr work weeks) and management wants more.

Many prominent staff who are well respected in their field of work have left within the last 3 years and there were absolutely no means of trying to keep them. Instead, they were cited as "not team players". Massive lay-offs at the financial year-end (May/June) with no notice to other staff; you'd be trying to contact the person about a project and then a day later you'd discovered they were let go. Your performance is based on your utilization (project bill out) and if it dips below 80% you can expect a pink-slip... everything is number based, in fact, you're nothing but a number. If your company is part of a merger/acquisition to GHD you will notice that GHD will protect their own staff, not your company's.

Salary is extremely low... you can expect to be making $15K less than the Ontario average (as issued by the Professional Engineers of Ontario) and if your role has changed there is no increase. You'll be lucky to receive inflation.

My advice to whoever is considering this firm, is to run... fast.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of this top heavy management. Do some real project work.
