  1. Intro to Sales

Current Employee - Sales Associate in Noblesville, IN
Current Employee - Sales Associate in Noblesville, IN

I have been working at GNC part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The position is oriented around crafting a nutritional/athletic program for a customer, and providing advice on beneficial supplements, and there's always something a customer could benefit from!

    Cons

Sales requirements can cause unnecessarily antagonistic reactions and motivate "salesman-y" tactics. Variable commission made on a rotating list of products can tempt you to recommend something because it makes you more money, and not because it's the product the customer would most benefit from.

    Advice to Management

Increase the base pay for sale associates and lower commission.

    I worked at GNC part-time

    Pros

Great opportunity for individuals to learn about supplements. Great job for individuals who are truly interested in helping others achieve their goals.

    Cons

VERY VERY VERY sales based job. Leads those who solely want to achieve their sales goals to sell the items we are forced to sell. No experience required to be on job. Some managers don't train well/know their supplements well. Can be a big worry for customers' health.

    Advice to Management

Make sure management is knowledgable and actually know what each supplement does. This is a job that REALLY affects peoples' health. Make sure to educate your associates and have them guide customers to correct supplements.

    Pros

Traveling all around the globe. Meeting fantastic people.

    Cons

Senior Leadership. VP, President, CEO only focus on shareholder value and not what will help sustain long term growth. Proof is 6 quarters of failing to meet expectations.

    Advice to Management

Drop your ego. You are an embarrassment to franchisees both internationally and domestically. Team and partner with everyone. Together, you will be better.

    I worked at GNC full-time

    Pros

Great products Great learning experience Flexible hours Great for career growth

    Cons

Biased pay stucture and merit raises are a joke Poor clerical budgets Inadequate training Too many operational tasks

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to get hands on with real customers and what sales reps experience in a retail setting, change the pay structure and stop opening stores without adequate man power to run them.

    I worked at GNC part-time

    Pros

You move up pretty quickly if you work hard. I worked my way up to store manager in less than two years.

    Cons

They are not flexible if you are attempting to go to school and get a degree. As much as I liked working there, they'll just push more and more hours onto your plate.

    Advice to Management

You'd be able to retain more employees if you listen to their needs. I was a good employee and would've loved to stay there if you had wrked with my schedule.

    I worked at GNC part-time

    Pros

    Discounts, Supplement Knowledge, Product Sampling

    Cons

Not enough hours, minimum wage, high prices that make customers hesitate

    Advice to Management

Allow for more hours to all employees. Only managers are given 40 hours which can frustrate many seeking stability. Also, increasing pay wouldn't hurt or lower prices to allow employees a chance at increased commission.
