A little stuck in the past but new management has been introduced and things are looking up.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing.

    Pros

M-F Work Schedule, Free Supplements, Competitive Compensation and Benefits

    Cons

Family owned and managed; executives and senior managers are not allowed to be fully effective in their positions. The corporate office is crippled by a pervasive "fear culture" where employees' job security depends upon keeping a low profile and not expressing opinions or suggestions that do not comply with the family management's beliefs or perceptions.

    Advice to Management

Replace "fear culture" with one where integrity is valued AND practiced; allow non-family executives and managers to make decisions without being micro-managed. Encourage open and honest communication without fear of reprisals or termination. VERIFY information regarding employment decisions rather than relying hear-say and misinformation.

    Pros

Easy going days. Most workers actually work only half the day and BS the rest. Great if you have no ambition and like loafing.

    Cons

Company wants change but is unwilling to actually implement meaningful changes in SOPs or personnel.

    Advice to Management

Adapt and change or go the way of the dinosaur.

    Pros

Everyone below the suits upstairs are wonderful folks but, the rest are not. Forget about upward mobility because there is none at all.

    Cons

Upper management. A list of the issues I saw or dealt with while there: racism, sexism, excessive profanity, and nobody seems to care at all that these things are going on.

    Advice to Management

    Stop being jerks

    Pros

Some very good co-workers. Free nutritional products. Except one day a month, it's pretty much a 8.5 hour day, so good work-life balance.

    Cons

The owner/founder is directly involved with everything in a knee-jerk fashion. This did not happen to me, but for example, he could happens to overhear a conversation someone is having over the phone (one sentence from one side of the conversation and strictly on policy, nothing rude or offensive), he can have the person fired immediately, no discussion, etc. Upper management (his V.P.s) are completely afraid of him and therefore, never back their employees. His daughter graduated from college, was brought in, had people fired, and is running one department. It's nuts.

    Advice to Management

    Grow a pair.

    Pros

Good work/life balance, especially for more senior management.

    Cons

Just so the reader does not get confused with the other review about the "new blood" in this company. All of the "new blood" lost the battle with the old guard and is no longer around, with the exception of extended family hires. It's a real shame. The old guard runs on antiquated systems and management practices from 1980s. Command and control management so no new ideas are surfaced or entertained. COBOL still works so why change? Really?!

    Advice to Management

What got you here won't get you there.

    Pros

New blood has been introduced to management which has added a level of change; replacements, encouraged retirements, reformulations of products, new branding efforts. These changes have been for the better, however the bottom line results for the US market has yet to be seen. Internationally, however, reception seems to be quite positive. The work-life balance is highly dependent on which department you are apart of: Accounting has quite a bit of temps running in and out and overall they always seem to be the last to leave. The warehouse get in early and leave early. Product team seems like a pretty well oiled machine, but understaffed at three people plus an executive assistant. Marketing Communications seem be busy all the time and report directly to a head executive, though I don't see them staying late. Distributor Services is a tight knit group of ladies who know their functions rather well and have Saturday hours for phones. I don't hear much about promotions or raises much. This is highly dependent on the department head. However, the perks are quite nice. Quarterly luncheon food has dramatically improved since the new executives came in. There's a decent amount of holidays and the vacation time, for me, has never been an issue; it's generous. In terms of Career Opportunities... I think the new blood is looking for new ideas, but the workers here have been with the old guard for too long that they're not speaking up.

    Cons

If you're looking for the top paying job for the little guy... look else where. It feels like you have to be a total rockstar to get any raises... and even then the percentage increase is dismal. Company Loyalty is not a hot commodity here in terms of financial gain. They recognize your anniversaries of employment and even give you a catalog of items(which have improved with the new management), but the raises are few and far between.

    Advice to Management

Work hard to gain the trust of your employees. This is done thru actions. Make someone an example of how to move up in the ranks; show us what you respond to and encourage middle management to do so as well.

    Pros

Family-oriented. Many good hearted people at all levels of the organization. A relatively nice office environment. Some very good products.

    Cons

Many lifetime executives that have myopic view of business. Lack of women in senior level roles. Many antiquated product formulas with no new products in pipeline.

    Advice to Management

Hire new experienced and well-rounded executives that know how to manage systems and people and let them do it. Innovate product offerings in order to attract new consumers.
