Studio Manager

Supervisory Visual Information Specialist (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at GPO full-time for more than 5 years

ProsStrong community and tradition. Legislative branch salaries run higher than their Executive branch counterparts. Plenty of training and career enrichment opportunities.

ConsThe threat of downsizing was pervasive. It was hard to chart the future of a printing company in a digital age. The buildings were very old and out-of-date so there were issues with drafty windows, leaky roofs, and indoor air quality.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are experts in every department. Additional effort should be placed in transferring their legacy of knowledge to the institution.

Interesting agency with a proud tradition wide range of talented and motivated employees as well as older retiree types.

Project Manager (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at GPO full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThere are many talented employees who are passionate about their work and take pride in the agency's mission. The culture is very relaxed and overall supportive of individual's goals.

ConsThere are not many opportunities within the agency for growth so talented people sometime remain stagnant in their careers if they want to remain at the agency.

GPO - time to revamp your HR and Contracting.. because you can't do either.

IT Service Technician (Current Employee)
Washington, DC

I have been working at GPO

ProsIt's the Government and has the associated Government perks

ConsSenior Management hasn't got a clue as to what they are doing. They are five years behind the curve from the private sector. Within the last administration a serious effort has been made to contract out software and services.. but the results have cost the taxpayer more than they will ever know.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop outsourcing mission-critical software and services... just stop it.. seriously... it's costing the taxpayers millions! And more importantly... it's tying you into contractors that you are never going to be able to shake free of..
