I have been working at GRAMEEN AMERICA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The mission is very compelling, and for anyone interested in microfinance, Grameen is where it all started, so it seems like a great place to start/ gain experience.

    Cons

There is a clear lack of professionalism in the organization from the top down. This leads to disorganized supervisors, with no boundaries and very poor communication skills . My personal experience and observations were managment was abusive, abrasive, rude and highly unprofessional. This is further illustrated in the big salary gap between the senior staff and the junior staff. For an organization that is focused on alleviating poverty, the salaries of the bulk of the staff is under living wages. In the two years I was associated with the organization, I do not exaggerate, there was 100% staff turnover in several departments - again employees frustrated and voting with their feet.

    Advice to Management

The Board, as a governing body, needs to see the evidence (100% staff turnover in 2 years), poor morale, terrible culture, and demand a change in management and insight into organizational practices.

I worked at GRAMEEN AMERICA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful mission and program, achieving real results from the program on the ground. The backing and history of success, and the well-known name go a long way in establishing credibility. There is huge potential for the program to be one of the best non-profits.

    Cons

Terribly disorganized and badly run - this is felt throughout the company. Extremely low employee moral and extremely high turnover rate. Below-average salaries. Lack of formal training processes for employees, transparency, and check-ins with supervisors lead to inefficiencies and confusion.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the high turn-over rate and make real changes to boost employee morale. Hire more staff so that employees are not over-worked.

Salaries are below average for a non-profit.
