I have been working at GSMA

    Pros

The breadth of projects and subjects at our events ranges from emerging markets and social interests to bleeding edge technology.

    Cons

Hectic pace with little time to step back and catch your breath before the next event or project.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

other than our event cycle...what's the strategy for growth in Atlanta?

I have been working at GSMA

    Pros

Non profit with excellent view of global issues and perspectives in mobile. Ability to generate solid black book of contacts and relationships.

    Cons

Non profit association governed by mobile network operators. Often extensive international travel. Very limited U S presence. Often technical focused.

I have been working at GSMA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent travel opportunities and exposure to high level decision makers

    Cons

Poor leadership with no decision makers at the top, internal politics takes up too much of the working day leaving not enough time for any real work to be completed, have not stepped up to the challenge of driving the industry forward during a time of competitive market dynamics, limited opportunity for personal development and growth

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some leadership, make some decisions and effectively communicate. Less of the abstract visions and more action via a clearly defined plan to get to the end goal.

I have been working at GSMA full-time

    Pros

Salary is OK, flexible working applies at times. Interesting industry.

    Cons

Once you are good at what you do they won't let you move up. Flexible working applies to people in different ways and there are way too many politics affecting everyone in the different teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your reports and do something about it.

I have been working at GSMA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great exposure to the entire global mobile industry in many aspects.
Abundant opportunities to work with mobile companies in every part of the world (much better than consulting firms), interacting with C-levels and working levels.
Highly motivating and challenging work on critical industry topics.
Some really smart and talented people.
    Very flexible work arrangements.

    Cons

CEO and some senior management focus more on self-PR campaign over media and high exposure events rather than looking after the company and its employees.
Often high media exposure is considered more important than actual quality of work.
As a result the company is lacking a good leadership.
Tedious politics by people who have built their own territories over decades, causing painful silos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should stop using GSMA and its resources as a self-PR platform. Instead of putting so much effort on individual networking with big names and wigs, the management should spend more time and energy on taking care of employees and actual quality contribution to the industry, that will be a true leadership.

I have been working at GSMA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Feeling of working for a big organisation. Its a lot bigger than initially thought of by future employers. Very foccussed and clear structure to do your job in, lots of training and support. Benefits are great, bonus, travel, healthcare, staff events, technology etc. Lots of diversity and exposure to a vast global network. They hire talented people.

    Cons

Lots of egos, the politics are insane and can make it a difficult claustraphopic environment sometimes. Hard to reach career goals due to too many middle managers allowed to hold you back, HR needs more to have more leadership and development direction and moniior certain personality types. Future employers dont rate the GSMA much on CV, which is a shame as it is a great influencer and global organisation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better management of the politics amonst staff and members would benefit the organisation immensley. Stop thinking they are the leaders in the field and concentrate on service more. Drop the Ego and improve HR.

I have been working at GSMA

    Pros

    - exposure to the whole world of mobile telecoms and a good birds eye view of many markets
    - can allow flexible working environments and hours
    - too many ex-consultants and the inevitable ''lovely'' powerpoints

    Cons

    - very little exposure to the coal-face of telecoms
    - since it is not as relevant to operators as it thinks it is, it is constantly changing to reinvent itself in fashion relevant to the industry
    - not enough people from operator or vendor backgrounds with real life GSM experience
    - many small teams with very little interaction between them
    - possibly a more political environment than the US government!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop attempting to lead the industry, the GSMA never will. Be satisfied with representing it effectively in the right places and helping where required by member operators and vendors.

I have been working at GSMA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

GSMA provides you an opportunity to work truly globally with the entire ecosystem and provides a fantastic vantage point for developing your network, as well as working on key telecom themes.

    Cons

The internal politics become a real hazard for getting work accomplished. The internal process does not necessarily make the best decisions for the operator stakeholders. At times, the overall metrics are more important than really making a difference in the market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop playing fiefdoms and start working towards the real market objectives
