Pros
(In order of importance, IMHO):
People
Compensation
Benefits
Cons
Not many - same as at any company in a high-paced, highly competetive industry.
Pros
After 1 year you are pretty settled in and have seen it all. There is a diverse group of people to work with considering the size but you still get to work with the same people frequently. Small company allows for face time with management team. Independent atmosphere still offers you certifications in industry partner companies.
Cons
Your only as good as your last sale. Yet, for a sales company, the sales team has the least amount of power. Company does not communicate a corporate strategy and offers no training to any emloyees, it is all OTJ and if you make a mistake it will get pointed out. Not very pro-active about supporting the sales team, which is the only team making money for the organization.
Advice to Senior Management
Offer pro-active support to sales teams. Train managers to be hands-on early in the process instead of just asking for status updates. Provide some guidance and training to staff.
Pros
Mid-level staff and personnel are very loyal and hold a strong belief for the good of the company.
Cons
Senior-level staff, management and executives are very skilled in deceiving their employees with false hopes. Very good at looking out for themselves. Work here if you like enjoy getting the short end of the stick or bending over.
Advice to Senior Management
Karma... what goes around comes around.
Pros
GTSI corp is a small friendly place to work. If you want to fly under the radar then work here.
Cons
GTSI seems to be going through tough times. Be very cautious about working here. The future is going to be unpredictable.
Advice to Senior Management
Upper management needs to take a step back and figure out what they want this company to be. As of now there is not much vision.
Pros
Work life balance is fantastic; you get to work with some great people. The ability to obtain certifications is available and for the most part encouraged. I had the ability to work in three different departments within 2 years, so transferring is not a problem if you are a competent employee.
Cons
Pay is far below industry average (I received a 30% increase when I transferred firms). It is a true hierarchical business. Managers report to managers who report to managers that report to other managers. That being said higher level managers tend not to listen to those that work on site with the client, instead listen to managers based out of the home office. To date I still cannot believe how many "team meetings" we had which was amazing considering all of GTSI is smaller than the project I am on now.
Advice to Senior Management
Have a true open door policy, stop working through middle managers.
Pros
very smart and friendly people
Cons
1. Very poor communications from upper managment unless they call a town hall style meeting and read from press release notes
2. Complete lack of information sharing
3. VP's in way over their heads
4. Cube farm
5. Have not caught up with the rest of the gov't contracting market in regards to comp time, flex work schedules
Advice to Senior Management
Do not run and hide when a crisis hits.
Pros
Name recognition, contracts and team
Cons
glass ceiling unless "one of the guys"
Advice to Senior Management
never dictate to management that someone needs to be laid off. Get their opinion first
Pros
Nice benefits package. Good market presence in Federal but not State and Local.
Cons
many managers are ex-Xerox so there is a good old boy network that does not punish incompetence if you are in the clique. pay scale is below market. way too many levels of management.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in resources.
Pros
They will hire virtually anyone and will open doors to bigger and better positions with other companies
Cons
Poor management direction, brown-nosing works too well.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees, they are the heartbeat of the company.
Pros
There is a strong team atmosphere. It was the most fun place I have worked. I have maintained all friendships made there since leaving. It provided a great stepping stone for the sales world.
Cons
The Sales model there provided very inconsistent income potential. Inside Sales Reps are paired with Client Execs. While some Client Execs are very skilled and guaranteed to close the business you found, others were very green. Unfortunately the pay is determined by closed business over which you have only some control. I found that the most successful territories had a very committed Client Exec and the ISR was literally an extension of them.
Advice to Senior Management
Have sales team managers. Not a separate manger for ISRs and CEs. The staff needs a uniformed goal with single leadership, not to be working in silos and often conflicting objectives.
