Gallium Visual Systems Software Engineer in Ottawa, ON (Canada): (Past Employee - 2007)

“Good technical growth, but don't stay long.”

Pros

Some neat and interesting work done in all aspects of software development. The overall balance between work and home was fair, only working overtime when required.

If you love C/C++ development, this place can provide a good technical development atmosphere. The senior and intermediate developer definitely know C/C++ and good coding habits. You can learn quite a bit using C/C++ and targeting multiple platforms (Windows, Linux, Unix...)

Cons

The lack of career path for employees is bad. Senior management think engineers and software developers are a dime a dozen, thus do not offer any career path. Really not interested in growing current staff and keeping them.

Advice to Senior Management

Stop treating the employees with contempt and acting like you know what is best for them. Everyone that had worked at Gallium had the potential to help the company grow, but were stepped on when showing interest. The promotion path also needs to be fixed, everyone at the senior level are good at passing the buck and blaming others for their mistakes and inaction. In fact, most seem good at talking and using the company for their own benefit rather than helping the company grow.
