Pros
Mostly young staff, good discounts, sometimes fun customers, inside industry news and knowledge, fast-paced environment, relaxed dress code, flexible hours.
Cons
Schedule based on performance, pressure from management to make hard sales, handling dirty used games and consoles, sales model based on pure profit from customers.
Advice to Senior Management
GameStop has virtually no competition, it makes all of it's money from used game sales. Quit pressuring customers for sales and provide a boutique-style experience in the store to make them comfortable and keep them coming back. Recognize when an employee works hard and not just employees who sell hard using dirty tactics used by management.
Pros
The discount. The hours were also good.
Cons
Customers Customers Customers. Inept Management. Horrible corporate managers.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus more on customer service, do not ignore your employees.
Pros
I really enjoyed not having commission and a lot of pressure for sales. When I described products to customers, I had no purpose in selling something someone wouldn't like, enjoy, or use. I came to recognize a lot of customers, and they recognized me, making the workplace a more friendly and mutually beneficial place. GA's (as well as all other levels of management at the stores) have to sell magazines, reservations on games, and warranties, but a few of those a day is a natural part of the job; and as long as you don't go hog wild it's not difficult to find people who would use them. Most of the training is spent on the why and how, rather than on the 'how to do more faster' techniques.
Management also feels like they're a part of the team rather than creating a 'Do as I say' kind of environment.
Cons
They should be paid for for what they can do. The hours available (even at a Senior Game Advisor level) are appalling until holiday time.
Advice to Senior Management
I wish GameStop spent more on their employees' wages rather than being so wasteful. They probably pay them so little so they can be wasteful and make mistakes. If management considered this when training, and subsequently when giving their yearly performance reviews/raises the GA position could more accurately be rewarded for their good work.
Pros
you get to spend your day talking about video games
Cons
i wish the pay had was a bit better, if it had been, i would have stayed longer
Pros
The people you work with are nice, the customers can be nice, 15% discount if you can afford to buy anything.
Cons
Low pay
Long hours
Ridiculous amount of work for a part time manager'
Store manager get all the perks
Advice to Senior Management
Pay your employees more. Seriously. Working retail for a long time should get more than just $8.00 an hour for a management position. Find more efficient ways to do business besides pushing your employees to sell crap that no one wants.
Pros
PROS
Employee discount, product check-out policy and fellow employees/store-level management. Customers are easy to work with and it's fun to work in your hobby.
Cons
CONS
Low wages, inconsistent business model, unfair recognition policies and unrealistic sales/promotion expectations. Too many employees means an inconsistent and unfair distribution of the low hours allotted to the store, which is constantly understaffed and unable to meet customer expectations.
Advice to Senior Management
Start using customer feedback and customer service abilities to gauge employees instead of pre-order sales and reservations. Have senior management become more involved in local operations by seeing day-to-day operations to manage expectations and properly evaluate store performance. Provide perks to employees that perform well instead of just managers (free games, promotions, etc.). Some store managers corall all the items for themselves instead of farming it out to their performers.
Pros
Get to be around video games
Make close friends with coworkers
I met my husband there. That's more personal, though.
Cons
No commission
Sales numbers are pushed on employees of any position
Management is awful
Corporate system is unstructured
Loud TVs
Advice to Senior Management
Please talk to your employees and let them know what's going on. Don't leave them in the dark so much.
Pros
Discount off games and accessories.
Cons
Every job has its cons but if I had to point out a specific one; it would be the whole you have to get NPS(otherwise known as the surveys). For any future Gamestop employee I recommend call your AM or DM if your boss isn't doing his job.
Advice to Senior Management
More communication at the store.
Pros
This is a good place to learn the repair of game systems and other products. There is steady work, good benefits (plus GameStop store discounts), and optional overtime available most months.
More career opportunities may be available in the future, as they expand into refurbishing other products.
Cons
In refurbishing, it's very much management by numbers, with penalties for not meeting individual production quotas. A constantly fast-paced environment.
Pros
If you like games its good. Most of store store is friendly and fun. Great for a second job for a day or two a week.
Cons
Corporate is constantly cutting hours making it hard for part time employees to work. This puts a bigger strain on management. The ideas and tasks emailed down are constantly going back and forth and hit with big deadlines with no help its hard to get done. The pay is low, and the stress level is very high. There is a high amount of turnover with store managers right now. Ones that have been there 10 years and more are walking away due to treatment. Don't get me wrong I'm not hating gamestop. I loved it,but with the way corporate is right now something needs fixed. Too many people are losing the desire they once had for the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Figure payroll first and foremost. Its constantly getting worse. You are putting to much on dms and sms. You are losing way too many great managers over the stress gamestop is putting on them. I doubt honestly if some the higher ups would work a black Friday with low payroll would stick with it. Get back to the way it was back in 08 and 09. It was enjoayble times. Its not now sadly. If it was myself and others would GLADLY been with you still.
