Advice to Senior Management
Make your employees first, instead of the stockholders
Pros
Relative freedom in choosing enterprise topics, great camaraderie among the night staff, relatively affordable and quality benefits, fantastic photography and layout staff. I met a lot of interesting people I wouldn't have otherwise.
Cons
Single and/or childless employees were expected to pick up the slack of the parents, men were treated with more respect than women, hours and workload increases due to layoffs not offset by pay increases.
Pros
They had nice facilities - on site gym, beautiful campus, most employees are friendly and helpful, even some senior level employees
Cons
Very difficult to get promoted. Media inndustry having trouble. Managers getting pulled in too many directions and just not enough resources.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to employees at the lower levels - they have a better sense of what's happening on the front lines.
Pros
Great management team.
Informative and cutting edge discussions and forums by industry professionals.
This company is inclined towards individual employee's growth.
Cons
The salary could always be more.
Advice to Senior Management
I like the way the company is being run now, there is constant communication between departments, so we are always aware of what is happening.
Pros
Large company - you can do well with a good territory
Cons
If you have a good territory you are fine - but they are not all equal
Pros
It was family oriented at one time. The employees that worked there were like family.
Cons
Management was no good. They only concerned about laying off people so their bonuses would be a good one.
Advice to Senior Management
Learn to understand the feelings of people and not your wallets.
Pros
It's a big company with lots of resources (relative to other outlets), a good attitude toward employees, and an eye toward keeping and promoting young employees.
Cons
The company is making cutbacks throughout its newspaper division, so the future of any reporter within the company feels somewhat uncertain. You just hope if you do a good job, you'll be able to stick around.
Pros
Courier-Post newspaper was an exciting place to work at one time because something was always happening.
Cons
Because of layoffs, everyone worked harder to complete all the jobs. Nothing was eliminated and still had to be done.
Advice to Senior Management
Management should be honest with their employees and stop being secretive. Find out why employees are unhappy after the layoffs.
Pros
It was a salaried and benefited position close to home.
Cons
Furloughs, pay freezes, management favoritism, unprofessional.
Advice to Senior Management
Implement manager training programs.
