Pros
Everyone can leave work at a decent hour. Many nice people.
Cons
Upper manager don't not respect employees. If you don't make your numbers you are out. Very few pomotions. All white men in senior management.
Advice to Senior Management
Needs to be replaced!
Pros
I wish I could think of one. Maybe if they had jumped onto and effectively promoted their online presence much earlier than they did they wouldn't be bleeding from a thousand cuts. Good people on the editorial side.
Cons
I can only give feedback on my time in mid-size markets in the Mid-Atlantic, but if you like working for what I assume were decent salespeople who have been promoted into a level of incompetency (i.e. sales managers,) being forced into unproductivity with needless "sales and goal meetings," no training, descending account lists, print products and packages no one would be interested in unless you're in that rare market where broadcast doesn't dominate, unrealsitic sales budgets, horrible morale, and bad marketing, etc., then Gannett is the company for you.
Advice to Senior Management
Send experienced (not your recent MBA newbies) corporate level advertising sales and marketing auditors into all of your failing markets to audit your local managers. If Gannett, as a corporation, knows how to compete, you should be shocked with what you'll discover.
Pros
builds your resume. notable brands. Pay was good and experience was helpful in gaining my next job. good benefits overall.
Cons
linear thinking. newspaper thought still runs the company direction - though its a dying industry. management (executive) is the epitome of 'ivory tower'.
Advice to Senior Management
Realize that it takes more than a few VPs/Directors to formulate a strategy. Rebranding your logo is nice, but a waste of time. Focus on actionable, measurable growth opportunities.
Pros
Free copy of papers provided at office.
Cons
Constant layoffs and furloughs while top brass rake in bonuses. Company cares more about the bottom line than putting out a top-notch product.
Advice to Senior Management
Instead of handing out excessive bonuses to the top echelon, re-invest in the company by hiring more and better reporters, columnists and editors instead of cutting their jobs to the bone.
Pros
New initiatives keep the workflow varied. There is certainly never a dull or boring moment and the day always passes quickly.
Cons
This is no longer a good company for career pathing. There are nearly no opportunities for career growth or development.
Pros
I am able to do my job on my own time. I am not called asking where I am. They will give you time off when ask and will work with you on half days and such.
Cons
The company is on a huge downfall they are letting people go faster then you can imagine. They do nothing to recognize you for your accomplishment. There politics are out of order they have value of people who can't do there job and the ones that can not move up.
Advice to Senior Management
Recognize your employees for there accomplishments. Stop cutting your budget with pay freezes and downgrades in health care year after year.
Pros
Nice people, nice place and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Cons
Not alot of growth and training opportunities.
Advice to Senior Management
The leadership needs to react faster to change.
Pros
Corporate focus, rescources and fiscal responsibility
Cons
Inherent challenges to keep ahead of the quickly changing media environment.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep planning for and embracing the future
Pros
Top-notch editorial staff and writers.
Great working environment.
Decent opportunity for transferring to other papers.
Opportunity to move up within the paper.
Cons
Most of the top-notch editorial staff and writers were laid off or left after 3 years of successive layoffs, pay freezes and furloughs.
Good, profitable papers suffer from a reduction in staff in an effort to affect the overall corporation's quarterly reports.
Pros
The people I worked with were amazing. Certain upper management individuals are really great people who care about their employees and care about the product they are selling. I really enjoyed my job.
Cons
Upper management is completely reactionary. Communication with middle management is abysmal. No feeling of job security at all. Employee moral is low with little done to improve the situation. Pay is low.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your managers
