Pros
Clean and attractive work environment, prestige
Cons
Good O' boy attitude, really not interested in innovative ideas, top down management style, compensation inadequate, training and development inadequate, not really committed to diversity
Advice to Senior Management
invest in your shining stars or someone else will
Pros
Talented front line teammates attempt to perform work well under trying conditions while maintaining a positive attitude about the company's future.
Cons
Back-stabbing culture tolerated by management. Micro-managing and lack of input from staff actually performing the work that drives subscribers and page views.
Advice to Senior Management
Far too many controls and rigid rules, handed down from corporate. Give local properties the ability to drive decisions and results internally.
Pros
Job Flexibility, Good People, Okay management
Cons
Unstable employment (furloughs and layoffs)
Pros
Good place to get some experience if you're starting out - they're so short-staffed that you'll work on projects that would be given to people with far more experience elsewhere.
Cons
Management treats employees like dirt. Pay is well below industry standards and they expect employees to do massive amounts of unpaid overtime. The few benefits that exist are systematically being eroded. Everything is about saving money. They wonder why employee turnover is so high - pretty obvious to anyone who has worked there.
Advice to Senior Management
Not much point in offering advice - they don't listen to employees anyway.
Pros
good benefits and 401K. Excellent vacation. Health ins. programs ok.
Cons
70% of company laid off in last 12 or so months due to outsourcing and downsizing.
Advice to Senior Management
Outsourcing was a hugh mistake. Look what it cost you in the long run. Company going under.
Pros
Work was always changing and immediate staff I worked with were good people.
Cons
The property I worked at seemed unprepared to bring its newspaper into current digital technology and keep up with local news. Management was not always helpful in directing its staff.
Advice to Senior Management
Management seemed ill fit for most situations and could benefit from some training in advanced management skills.
Pros
Benefits are wonderful and compensation plan......when followed is also great.
Cons
Management is former salespeople who were good, not necessarily good managers.
Pros
Very interesting work that is ever changing, lots of opportunities to learn, pretty decent amenities onsite, good benefits and employee discounts.
Cons
No longer matters what you know or how good your work is; quality no longer counts. Promotions and salary increases are based on biased favoritism, depending on who you know and kiss up to. Used to be a very friendly place - no more. Very cut throat, cold, sterile environment. Country club atmosphere due to managers not giving a hoot where their employees are during normal business hours. Morale is poor due to layoffs, furloughs, facility services cuts. People who were let go should not have been, whereas people who deserved to go are still there.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop catering and pandering to yourselves and the Board of Directors.
Pros
Employees are overall good people
Benefits
Good Location
Cons
Unless you are an outside rep there is no opportunity to make any money
No leadership, no knowledge of industry.
Everyone is hired because of who they know, not what they know.
Constant change of direction
Don't churn your employees, they are your voices to your customers. You burn your employees you burn relationships.
Training is sub par
Advice to Senior Management
Change commission structure.
Give your employees something valuable to sell then overpriced banner campaigns.
Provide better training. More internal help.
Need veteran leadership, not just someone who came from a good company.
Pros
Great advancement opportunities if you are willing to relocate. And you do not always get to "choose" the place you go. Sometimes it's an opportunity you "can't refuse".
Cons
You may have to move to an undesirable place to advance your career. Can be very stressful at times to get things done.
Advice to Senior Management
Really none to share. I had great opportunities to advance with significant training. Continue to look for talent and promote.
