    I have been working at Gardner-Denver Water Jetting Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    I did the branding and materials for Water Jetting Systems, which was formed by the merger of 3 distinct companies. I got to do everything from start to finish and there was always a new challenge. This was a perfect fit for me.

    Cons

    GD never understood water jetting as an industry or as a product line, and treated it inappropriately. The company has problems, beginning with the "wage parity" program setting all salaries across the board, no matter the location, by Quincy, IL standards... which means they cannot get or keep competent personnel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Quit trying to make your entire staff contractors. Too many major engineering problems that need fixing in order to compete in the marketplace, and people who have no skin in the game are not going to fix the problems.

    Pros

    Wide variety of tasks. Lots of opportunity to cross train. Opportunity for "Peter Principle" type employees to rise in rank.
    Stable sales & service staff.

    Cons

    Pay scale based on "parity" with Quincy, IL... not on par with the rest of the oil-patch. Massive loss of qualified personnel in all areas coupled with inability to replace them. Most of key professional staff is contractors that are looking for other jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Time to start paying local scale for engineering, machine shop and large assembly.

    Pros

    Decent pay and benefits but lacks career growth. This is a real 40-hour a week job – few people work more than that. If you play "the game” it’s easy to be liked by management.

    Cons

    Poor Management and high employee turnover. It's not about what you know but who you know. Poor upper level management decisions are preventing the company from growing and becoming profitable. This place will suck the life right out of you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    There's a reason why employees don't stay. Listen to your employees or you will end up with only the incompetent ones. Acknowledge that you might have the wool pulled over your eyes by division. Low morale isn't your biggest problem, you need to stop making excuses and start by making changes with Division Senior Management. People are going to continue to leave until that happens.
