    Awesome internship!

    Software Engineer Intern (Former Employee)
    Olathe, KS

ProsI was able to work on really interesting problems. Everyone was very nice and intelligent. My supervisor really cared about my personal career advancement.

ConsFree intern housing wasn't that great. But it was free! Other than that, I don't really have anything to complain about.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize that the job that you may deem entry level is not. Many positions in this company are extremely challenging and require a great deal of expertise and outside learning. The Aviation Industry is a different breed and all of us involved have spent a considerable amount of time and money on our education. As much as you think we learned it all on the job, we did not. It took years of honing our skills to even begin to be able

    Dull cubicle farm

    Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Olathe, KS

ProsThey pay well for the area and the benefits package is the best around.
The people are friendly and there are lots of out of work activities arranged.

ConsThey had the audacity to advertise themselves as the "Google of the mid-west" but nothing could be further from the truth. This is a grey, old fashioned cubicle farm where employees clock in at 8, go through hours of pointless meetings and clock out at 5pm on the dot with barely any work being done.

If you do try to get any work done you will be hit by roadblocks at every turn. Usually fighting their out-dated internal software and practices but it can also be peers and management expressing shock (and disappointment!) at your progress for "making them look bad".

I didn't last long here. It felt like being strangled and suppressed, dying a little piece every day until you join the ranks of the Garmin zombies trudging through to retirement and a gold watch.

    Advice to Senior ManagementModernize.

    Just OK

    IT Manager (Current Employee)
    Olathe, KS

Pros* Good health care even though we have to pay for some of it now
    * Exciting industry
    * Willing to invest in technology
    * Company has no debt, strong financially

Cons* Will Garmin be able to make up for the sinking PND market?
    * Poor salary
    * Tries to do too many projects at once. Can't have 50 #1 priorities

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want to keep the high quality talent that joined Garmin in the last 5 years during the down economy, you need to pay them a better salary. You're sitting on hundreds of millions of $, paying it out in dividends, why not invest in your employees?

    Great Benefits

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe health insurance and dental benefits are great. Lots of company discounts and perks.

ConsVery flat structure so little to promotion opportunity. Pay is typically below industry average, but they feel they can get away with paying less because the benefits are so good. Company is ran like a small business and is therefore not very open minded or forward thinking on policies that may make it easier to work for their employees to work. Sometimes the focus is more on saving money vice quality.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdopt more modern work policies, attract better talent, and stop being so cheap, you get what you pay for.

Monotonous & boring, not challenging, little career growth

    Engineer (Former Employee)
    Olathe, KS

ProsVery relaxed and flexible work environment, great benefits, and good work/life balance. Overwhelmingly nice coworkers.

ConsGarmin was my first job out of college and, based on my interview with them, it sounded like an exciting, innovative place to work -- great for a new engineer. I couldn't wait to dive in. Unfortunately, it fell far short of that initial promise...

The work itself was, to put it mildly, boring. There was nothing to make me feel engaged or invested in it. Most projects assigned were either small/inconsequential or rehashes of prior designs. The few new, innovative product designs were left to more senior engineers. Many projects were started and stopped, never seeing completion...especially when Garmin unsuccessfully dipped into the mobile phone market. Felt like it was impossible to grow and develop as an engineer here. Often stuck in minor supporting roles on projects even as you are supposedly "advancing" to higher levels (Engineer II, III, etc.)...which should in theory command more responsibility.

All in all, I spent almost 5 years at Garmin, and at the end, felt like, professionally, I advanced little beyond when I first came out of college.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow younger engineers the chance to take on more advanced, more complex projects.

ProsTeam events, charity, culture, perks, great campus

Conslarge company, career path is very competitive

Advice to Senior ManagementDepartment managers should have less say in who they promote as team managers.
