I worked at Garmin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Great benefits
    - Gym on location
    - Fun to use Garmin gadgets

    Cons

    - No advancement opportunity
    - Pay is below average for the field
    - Office is very boring, lacks energy
    - 100% desk job, extremely repetitive

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Better pay for the position is must. Need performance based raises. 3% for a great job and 1% for an average job is no incentive.
    - The company has an extremely high turn over rate yet nothing is done to fix it. They ask for employee feedback then ignore it.
    - Too many management levels. Everything got lost in the shuffle. Between the CEO and I there were roughly 10 bosses.

Good experience out of college but IT department needs serious re-work

I worked at Garmin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

-Lots of learning opportunities for college grads with vast exposure if you ask for it
-Good work environment and lots to do

    Cons

-Disparity in pay for associates at the same level is huge (~30,000 annually)
-Lots of unexplained rewards along with good performers being passed up for rewards mysteriously
-Senior IT management, decisions and policies are questionable and very autocratic; little power to mid level management
-As a result of the above points, a lot of great resources have resigned
-The Exec Assistant wields more power than IT managers and throws her weight around resulting in frequent confrontations (moron!)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-My advice to high level executives is to re-structure and re-evaluate the vision and leadership in support organizations like IT and introduce a more democratic process in their daily functions. This will bring some out of the box thinking in and keep resources and processes current with IT peers in the industry
-A cultural shift is required where customer feedback should carry a lot of weightage as far as resource <-> customer engagement is required. Those that are the most involved with customers should be the ones with maximum face time with them
-Introduce 360 degree feedback and add face-time with executives so they know the pain points of resources at the lowest levels
-Compensation disparity between employees at the same level should be bridged regardless of immigration status

    Pros

Caring company with a sense of purpose and fantastic benefits

    Cons

I worked in the I.T. department and I would recommend that anyone try to avoid that department and go to engineering or aviation instead. There is more flexibility in other departments with a more positive atmosphere. I.T. leadership told us to drive to work during blizzards or else take vacation time; meanwhile other departments were working from home. This was representative of some overall negativity that I experienced in I.T. that didn't seem to permeate other departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Remake the I.T. department

Current Intern - Software Engineer Intern in Olathe, KS

I have been working at Garmin as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone here gives the feeling that they love it here just as much as I do. The international headquarters is centered in Olathe, KS, a suburb of Kansas City. There are many benefits to this like having the convenience of being in a big city while still having the outdoors and nature feel less than an hours drive away.

    Cons

As is common for larger companies, it is hard to feel like the projects that you are working on are making a huge difference.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your doing great! Keep up the awesome work.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Garmin's culture is relaxed but motivating. I've seen senior management dress up for Halloween, but we're doing serious work too. Lots of intelligent engineers, so it's a great place to continually hone your skills. They are committed to their employees and hire slowly to avoid the need to lay off later when projects finish. Garmin is improving its training offerings, both technical and inter-personal, and in the last couple of years has gotten much better in that area.
Because of the various divisions and the vertical integration style of the company, there are usually lots of internal opportunities if you are not happy with your current position. Many of my coworkers have transferred in or out of my group from/to other groups.
Overall, Garmin does a pretty good job of maintaining a culture that feels almost like a startup (outside of Aviation, which necessarily is more process driven).

    Cons

Slow hiring means that we are always pretty busy as we could almost always use some more people.
Promotions are still guided mainly by time, not skill level.
Management can be slow on the public recognition of good efforts, but they are working on that.

    Pros

Typically decent working hours with a lot of intelligent people.
Recently added more opportunities to advance.
Good healthcare. Friendly working environment. Team leads are promoted from engineers who typically know the products well.

    Cons

Managers are frequently promoted from engineering staff, but are not always the most interested in actually being a manager. At the time upper management did not appear to care that compensation was below average for the area. This has since been adjusted.
