I worked at Garmin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    + 40-hour work week + Benefits + Work/life balance = Leave every day by 5:00 + Relaxed Culture

    Cons

+ Shoulder Shrug Management "Not my problem" + No Clear Career Direction + Lack of Accountability + No Leaders

    Advice to Management

Management would rather shuffle problematic employees from team to team and group to group vs. dealing with them. So instead of stopping the problem, it only grows as poor-performing employees move from team to team and get new titles / fewer responsibilities

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of really talented people working here. They offer flex time, a very good 401K and very good health insurance. They also have a completely casual dress code.

    Cons

Upper management micro-manages everything. They stifle innovation. They like to think that all employees are equal even though some produce much more than average.

    Advice to Management

Let the people who know their jobs have more input into what happens. Don't pay average salaries and expect to keep above average employees. Remember that your employees are your most important asset.

  5. Good place to start out, easy to feel lost in the sea of engineers.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Long term stability, very nice people everywhere. I've made a lot of good friendships here. There is only as much pressure as you want there to be. The company is also large enough that if you don't like where you are, you can probably go elsewhere without switching employers.

    Cons

Raises are barely over cost-of-living generally and the work can feel a little "behind the times" sometimes.

  6. They hire some of the best available locally, most everyone is wonderful to work with.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great experience for interns and good first job to learn about the software engineering process.

    Cons

They have been growing for a number of years and were focused on whatever it took to make money. They are finally beginning to focus on managing the internal business. It's just very slow going!!!!!!

    Advice to Management

Settle on a review system and make the grading consistent across the company.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people at Garmin are great to work with. Benefits are awesome and management is flexible about work schedules and time off. Very fitness-minded, work/life balance is excellent.

    Cons

Lack of structure and organization can be frustrating. Seems we are changing direction often, and with what appears to be very little forethought. There is always something new, which is soon abandoned for the next new trend in process management

I worked at Garmin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Got to learn a lot in the begining. Technology was innovative. Excellent benefits. Great mentors that pull you along very well. Kind of flexible hours. No parking problems.

    Cons

Heavy micro management. No room for growth. You do similar stuff for years. Late to market. Low pay. Review system is terrible. Only designed to find flaws. Low raises, low bonuses, if any. No room for promotions. Very conservative upper management all the way.

    Advice to Management

Be open to new ideas. Reward employees more than once a year. Don't nickle and dime for every thing.

    Pros

Great health insurance, great co-workers, HR is friendly, good management

    Cons

Ranking system, personal growth is non-existent in call center environment, pay is low

    Advice to Management

Consider changes to the ranking and raise system.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers. Highly skilled subset of people within. Good benefits

    Cons

Not much available for advancement. A lot of hoops to go through to get to the next level of your job, some unobtainable because of the length of project time and time of year advancements go through. Raises are laughable at best, and have rarely beat inflation.

    Advice to Management

Bonuses, better advancement/recognition, these things will greatly improve morale. A lot of the time it feels like you're looking through rose colored glasses at the rest of us.
