    I have been working at Gartner

    Pros

    Great people, products, services and benefits plus the ability to travel

    Cons

    Lots of micro managing and even though we're told to be client centric, the truth is be Gartner centric even at risk to your clients and you

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Train and hire better managers as opposed to promoting friends or making political appointments. Create a culture of valuing the individual and make sure your actions back this up. Too many people stay or are promoted based on who they know as opposed to their aptitude and ability or even a proven track record

    Pros

    * Extremely strong client focus
    * Very goal oriented
    * Competitive salary and benefits
    * Very strong brand recognition and respect by clients

    Cons

    Not really a "con", if you are in sales, there is a strong performance management culture and expectations. High performers are treated very well.

    Pros

    Great opportunity for Professional growth if you hit your numbers

    I worked at Gartner full-time

    Pros

    - Ability to work from home
    - Access to research (but learning is up to you)

    Cons

    - There is no culture or career path. You have to fend and fight for yourself. It takes considerable effort to do so and you are not encouraged or supported in that effort.
    - Depending on who you work with, the experience is extremely inconsistent. Some managing partners and engagement managers are great. Others are extremely poor. There is no effort to create standards of what "good" looks like. There are no project reviews after an engagement is over and there is no effort to improve the next time around. Many projects are undersold and overpromised.
    - Leadership is lacking in people management skills
    - Very slow to promote (2 year cycle is the fastest) and difficult to move past the Director level. There is no real career path. You have to carve out a niche for yourself and find people to align with. Most Directors and above are hired in from the outside.
    - The worst part is that the people who have been there a while and those that are in management positions either don't care or they are resigned to the status quo and don't believe anything can be done. Everyone else leaves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Implement training at all levels. Making a slide, managing a project, and selling are 3 different things.
    - Implement project reviews and feedback mechanisms. Encourage constructive criticism and openness.
    - Lower the internal billing rates
    - Align sales and delivery rather than keeping them separate. Don't sell what you can't deliver.

    I worked at Gartner full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    As a healthy, growing company, Gartner offers excellent training and growth opportunities. Salaries & benefits are competitive and there is good work/life balance. The performance-focused culture is largely a meritocracy.

    Cons

    Like any company, the politics can get intense. The company is also run in a very top down-fashion which may appeal to process oriented people but might not to more innovation focused people. The company also has low gender and ethnic diversity, especially in the upper management ranks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Allocate a bit more focus to blue-ocean innovation rather than focusing exclusively on operational innovation.
    2. Develop active policies to promote gender and ethnic diversity at all levels.

    Cons
