A good place to learn the craft of journalism but a poor place for long-term career advancement.

Editor (Former Employee)
Needham, MA

I worked at GateHouse Media full-time for more than 10 years

ProsWorking at GateHouse Media allows for entry-level journalists to get their start and dig into multiple aspects of community journalism.

ConsThe salaries in this field and at Gatehouse Media in particular are low and challenging for anyone looking to follow a long career with the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate more training opportunities and avenues for advancement for editorial staff.

Challenged

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at GateHouse Media

ProsGreat people to work with. Offers an opportunity to gain some good experience in the selling of digital products.

ConsFiscally unstable. Seems we are always selling to the needs of the paper and not the client...way too many special sales drives.

Advice to Senior ManagementDont shackle your sales team with endless reports. Allowing us the time needed to get out in the field and sell will increase revenue.

Behind The Curve...

Reporter (Former Employee)
Boston, MA

I worked at GateHouse Media full-time for less than a year

ProsA good starting point for journalism and entry into the business
Knowledgeable editors
Decent work-life balance
Variety of different stories to work on

ConsLow pay
No raises
Even on weeks of loaded coverage, approved overtime requires moving of Heaven and Earth
The company is $1.2 billion in debt (which accounts for those first three cons)
Way behind the 21st-century technology curve in news reporting

Advice to Senior ManagementApprove raises for the lifeblood of your company, the hard-working reporters, photographers and editors who bust their asses every day and week to put out the publications that keep the business going. Instead of for the exalted senior management getting bonuses in the six figures on the backs of the little people's efforts.

Get some clips and get out

Reporter (Former Employee)
Boston, MA

I worked at GateHouse Media full-time for more than a year

ProsGood place for some hard news experience.

ConsPoor pay and hard workload. Reporters write 4-8 stories weekly at a rate of $12.5/hour or $26k, about 2 nights each week covering town meetings until 10 p.m. Disillusioned editors who don't care about mentoring or improving your writing, but rather just putting out a paper and getting another day done with. No raises. If you're a college graduate interested in journalism, this company just might make you rethink your passions. Get some experience and get out before you're dragged too far down into the mud.

Advice to Senior ManagementINVEST in creating a better environment for employees. Let them feel they belong here, have a future at this company and that the company cares about them. None of this is being done right now.

With revolving cast of editors/managers, I had a bad draw.

Staff Writer (Former Employee)
Moscow, PA

I worked at GateHouse Media part-time for less than a year

ProsIndependence in finding stories. Paid mileage for driving to stories, meetings. Great place for newly graduated journalists to launch a career and then stick around to take on more responsibility.

ConsEditor that I had to deal with during my time there was NOT a team player. Was more focused on editing things for the sake of editing instead of to have positive impact on fluency of article. Would complain if I contacted her during certain hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have a really nice family of newspapers and subscribers. Just put positive, helpful editors in place and create more of a team atmosphere. You hire a lot of inexperienced writers-- which is a GOOD thing to give them a launching pad for their career-- so make sure they have MENTORS and not just bosses.

Outhouse Media

Ticket Monkey (Former Employee)
Downers Grove, IL

I worked at GateHouse Media full-time for more than 3 years

ProsShort commute
Near lots of restaurants
Lots of other "victims" who were nice to work for.

ConsUpper and middle management
Low pay
Upper and middle management
Outdated technology
No money
Upper and middle management
Sky high health insurance costs
No culture or values
No goals other than to not go bankrupt
Did I mention management

Advice to Senior ManagementYou're going to hell when you die for the way to treat your employees and your lack of respect for them, their lives and their families.
