    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Act like you care about employees, my department had 48 percent of the staff looking for jobs. I would not take a job here.

I have been working at Gates Corporation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

One of the higher paying jobs in this area with decent benefits. I'm sure if you are one of the "elite few' it's a great place to work.

    Cons

At the plant level, the leadership is based more on who you know than what you can do. Safety and quality are preached, but in reality what seems more important to management is what goes out the door to the customers - the numbers. When doing the job right the first time is important to you as an employee, it is very difficult to watch management more focused on the numbers reported to corporate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on true quality of the product that is being sent to our customers. Appreciate the associates and let them know it. Use the talent you have - the right person for the job - and get away from the "who you know or what will you do for me" attitude. Ensure the working environment is the best it can be so the employee can do the best they can. Give them some ownership - let them know it's important to do a great job.

I have been working at Gates Corporation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Solid advancement opportunities.
    Market competitive compensation & benefits.
Convenient LoDo location with free EcoPass.
Grass roots worker ethic from mid-level managers to production.
Culture is pride in hard work, built by employees - not management.

    Cons

General Counsel uses bully tactics to intimidate and threaten rank and file as well as senior leaders. Ironically, this role is also the final escalation level for ethics complaints.

CEO (a public figure) couldn't lead himself out of a paper bag. Has zero confidence with production and white collar staff. Note prior background as an attorney. Coaching attempts and the now defunct "Breakfast with the CEO" still have not improved his ability to inspire or otherwise engage employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mission accomplished. With the Blackstone purchase, Gates now has the great privilege to have been purchased with a significant amount of debt. Debt that will result in even more corner-cutting. As if it didn't already reek of cheap for the last 5 years. So please stop telling all levels of the organization that our new owners will not be directly managing business decisions. They already do. It was inevitable, but no need to say "business as usual" when you know full well there will be sweeping changes. (Ahem.... That quietly buried CFO departure announcement before the ink dried.... Yeah, that didn't go unnoticed.)

    Pros

Good people, everyone wants to do the right thing.

    Cons

Leadership team isn't strategic, stuck being reactive to day to day and can't see the bigger picture and how to grow the company. Tactically focused. Lots of politics

Superior products and do care about people. Its just that business conditions cause a strain at times.

    Cons

Planning is centralized at Corporate and not enough communication with plants. This causes too many knee jerk reactions and inefficiencies

I worked at Gates Corporation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Ability to network with others in the automotive aftermarket.

    Cons

Total disconnect when communicating with others. My experience has been that bad management likes a lot of paperwork. (on the plus side - you will get very good at spreadsheets) As a sales manager for over 10 years - was terminated. Reason given - "I'm not at liberty to say". Was let go ONE week shy of 55th birthday. Not sour grapes - just beware that turnover is extremely high. Most in management positions are totally inept. Ye' Old Peter Principle..... low morale throughout the sales force.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give salespeople the proverbial pat on the back from time to time.

I worked at Gates Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay is good, on the upper scale in columbia i'd say,401k match and health plans are good also.

    Cons

Management only cares about production at the expense of the safety of the employee's.They would have big safety meeting and then refuse to do things like putting safety cut-off switch's up stairs so people down stairs could'nt turn on the machine and kill you. Maintenance people were expected to fix things the way they wanted it fixed 'not the correct way. Personally saw a guy get hurt in the Mill area because they had taken some guards off to increase production.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask your self why with such a high paying job there is such a high turnover rate!

I have been working at Gates Corporation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Gates offers good pay rates with possible raises and promotions. They also offer good insurance rates and a 401(k).

    Cons

Favoritism and lack of accountability are two very large issues. The management staff do not look into reported problems, instead choosing to rely solely on their shift supervisors to be fair, and rarely doubt what the shift supervisors tell them. Mandatory overtime, sometimes up to 13 days in a row without a day off, is also an issue. They tell you that you can have a Saturday off if you hit your goal, but they still don't give it to you because the company is "barely keeping it's head above water". The attendance policy is a joke. If you are sick, it counts against your attendance, even if they tell you to go home or to the doctor. However, it is ok to miss due to bad weather.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A good position should be awarded to someone who deserves it, rather than one of your friends. You should never give someone a promotion simply because they are nice to look at. And you should definitely pay attention to the claims made by your shift leaders by checking the situation out for yourself. Also try talking to random floor associates to get a better feel for a certain situation. Bestowing blind trust in your shift leaders, especially in those who never should have been granted that title, may give poor results.

I have been working at Gates Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Gates is a growing company but also has a solid foundation. Often times there are opportunities to learn as change occurs and people are expected by management to step up and make those changes successful. There are many good people who work here and who are dedicated to the company.

    Cons

At times management displays favoritism towards certain employees over others. The growth driven objectives of the company can make the environment unstable which leads to personal uncertainty over job security.
