    Pros

Fun, smart, and talented coworkers. Management is approachable, polite, and responsive.

    Cons

Product is horribly out of date. It is awesome for analyzing Sanger data, but that market is dwindling and the NGS space has been advancing rapidly for more than 10 years.

    Advice to Management

There is a lot of catch up that needs to be done but once that happens I am confident in GCC to succeed.

Dysfunctional and paranoid - like working in a prison

    Pros

Ann Arbor is a nice town, and genetics is an interesting field.

    Cons

Howard, the owner and CEO of Gene Codes, runs the company as his personal vanity project. He is a capricious, hyper-emotional micromanager and the staff live in fear of his abusive tantrums. Managers aren't allowed to manage and staff are randomized - this is covered up as much as possible by a paranoid and secretive corporate culture.

This is a very dysfunctional and stressful environment - opportunities for professional development are extremely rare. The few long-time employees stay because they have no choice, the rest leave when they get the chance. Howard has been known to sue ex-employees, and tries to make everyone sign a gag agreement when they leave.

    Advice to Management

Some of the middle managers are good, others not so much - but in any case nobody is allowed to exercise control except Howard

    Pros

Location location location location and location.

    Cons

Shoot from the hip management style.
No plan, no purpose, just cruising along on rep and past achievements.
    Medieval management style and procedures.
middle management very uneven, some brilliant, some incredibly stupid. But it doesn't really matter as the owner makes all decisions anyway.

    Advice to Management

Fish or cut bait! Either turn this company into a world class organization, or sell it to someone who has the vision and guts to help this company move into the 21 century of the Biotechnology field. Start making software to handle the new generation of sequencing machines that are coming on the market. If you sit and wait until they INVITE you, and the market sorts out the winners from the losers, it will be too late and you will be one of the "losers."
