    Not the old Genentech

    ProsHaving worked in operations for eight years in Vacaville, South San Francisco and Oceanside, South San Francisco is by far the best location and still has a strong Genentech culture, Outside of San Francisco the culture is less noticeable, but in general People are nice, benefits are good not great. Ho-Ho's are nice , work can be challenging, co-workers are supportive

    ConsWorking in Vacaville or Oceanside pay is low, stock options are almost non existent, weak culture, poor management, management shoots from the hip with no clear plan or strategies. Managers are not leaders but "yes" men and women. Nearly impossible to advance to a new position unless you are part of the "in crowd". If you want the five star rating work in South San Francisco, Vacaville and Oceanside are disappointments.

    Advice to Senior ManagementMake an effort to strengthen the culture at Vacaville and Oceanside, allow internal applicants to advance their careers, improve contractor workers work conditions, fire managers that do not understand metrics and who manage their departments by threatening employees.

    Was doing better after merge but waning again

    ProsCompany still has potential and perks. They retain some of the original perks that made the pre-merge GNE great even though much of the spirit may not be as genuine.

    ConsRoche is reasserting itself and the culture is becoming more in business for business. Used to be "people first" but no longer investing so much in the individual contributors. Senior leaders instructed to message how to do more with less. Lots of nepotism with unfairness in hiring and promotion practices. Recently a job was announced that it would be posted for 5 days, open to internal candidates only, and that "a preferred internal candidate has been identified but you are welcome to apply". Compensation given on a curve so someone is always assessed as underperforming which fosters an environment of backstabbing, cliques and politics. Middle managers with no project work often need to create work for their reports because they don't have enough individual work to do resulting in micromanagement or bullying so they can be seen as high performers to their management. Senior leaders want middle management so they alleviate the number of reports to focus on politics and maneuvering. Organizations are top heavy making rank and file overworked with most of the pay going to the senior leaders who are rewarded with more compensation if they can squeeze more work from fewer people and lower pay.

    Advice to Senior ManagementRemove the layers of management that are not doing project work. Those with project work can have direct reports as they can best understand what their employees are going through. Clean up the governance structure so decisions can be made quickly instead of onerous slide preparation, briefings etc that delay overall timelines. Invest in your employees and give them ownership of their work and opportunities for development. Drive decision-making down to the lowest appropriate level. Increase fairness in promotion and hiring practices instead of making decisions based on 'cliques'. Think hard on cost-cutting decisions if the trade off is higher employee dissatisfaction and engagement. Foster integrity by keeping your promises. Senior leaders think they need to make the important decisions but perhaps they need to learn how to delegate better--generate data to see if smarter decisions are made by senior leaders or those that know the project and competitive environment best.

    Genentech is a great place to work

    ProsIf you are a regular full time employee, Genentech has great benenfits, generous time off and sick leave policies and many perks to engage employees ( weekly hoho's, department recognition events, Genentech gives back to the community events). The company is focused on improving the quality of lives of patients with serious diseases. It is very fulfilling work knowing you are positively impacting the lives of others.

    ConsCompensation is competitive and you can make more/money at other biotech/pharmaceutical companies, but the slightly lower salary at Genentech is offset by the benefit package.
    The environment has been trending toward a more corporate feel ever since the Roche take over.

    Benefits good - medical with affordable ppo, salary and bonus good
    Nice campus - lots of catering - parties
    Good busses - good train transportation

    ConsNot family friendly - depends on boss - not equal across company
    Hiring more temps - less perm workers
    Vacation limited - with sabbatical is still only 3 weeks per year. Culture does not allow for time off without pay

    ProsPay was good. Benefits are great. Corporate culture can be very positive. Lots of development opportunities and opportunities to develop career wise.

    ConsManagement skills sometimes lacking, employees have many competing priorities and seem overworked. My direct experience was with a director level person that was terrible at motivating people.
