    I worked at Genentech

    Pros

Great place to work. The compensation is nice along with their benefits. People are friendly and their training is very extensive. Generally like to promote from within.

    Cons

No much room for growth. Although raises happen often, it might take a few lateral movements before you can move vertically. From my experiences, however, the pay scale for out sourcing is so much higher than hiring internally. Work for the company for a little bit, go somewhere else and then come back and you will get paid at least 10% more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the culture friendly; moving to more of a 'corporate' feel does not suit the company's culture.

I have been working at Genentech

    Pros

    Wonderful people
    Interesting projects
    Close to San Francisco Airport
    Casual work environment
    Lots of Training Opportunities
    iPhone
Shuttle to drive you around campus
    Cafeteria

    Cons

    Unfair promotion policies
Because of cliques, you can feel left out / undervaled
They delivered the big OE announcement but there were so many unknowns. I feel like they know exactly WHO is going to get laid off and they aren't telling. It is like they want to use people up and then dump them.
It is hard to "drink" the kool-aid when you know the big wigs are just blowing a lot of hot air.
Mixing the Roche and Genentech culture is as sucsessful as mixing oil and water.

I would know Art if I saw him walking down the street. Art was more involved and in touch. Who is Ian?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more fair in the promotion and hiring. If you have a position and you already have "pre-selected" a candidate, then dont put people through the painful interview process.

I have been working at Genentech

    Pros

    Excellent medical benefits
    Culture is overall good

    Cons

    Management Arrogance
Lot's of talk, not a lot of action
    Little opportunity for advancement
    Lack of fairness in promotions
Clique's that include management affect individual advancement and promotions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To much of management are buddies with staff. HR violations abound but if you are one of the 'buddies' you do not get called on it. Must start treating all staff equally. Must be able to make decisions and act on them.

Former Employee - Co-Op in South San Francisco, CA

    I worked at Genentech

    Pros

Genentech is laid back and a fun place to work. People work hard, but don't live stressful lives. As a co-op, I was given meaningful projects and even got the chance to get my name of a paper. the Genenbuses made it easy to live in the city and the free muni passes made it easy/free to use public transportation. The lunches are really good and affordable. It was nice to never have to worry about packing a lunch.

    Cons

There isn't too much that I can say about my experience that was bad. There wasn't enough space for the co-ops/interns in my department, so some had to make their lab their desk. I was also there when Roche took over, so I only saw the beginnings of what was to come, change-wise. I've heard that they've made an effort to preserve the culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The culture is what makes Genentech so great, so please don't change things too much.
