I have been working at Genentech full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Admire the people I work with and enjoy working with them. Work is challenging yet rewarding. Comp and benefits together are fantastic.

    Cons

Work-life balance is fine, but don't come here expecting it will be handed to you. Instead, you have to own it and drive it and ensure your manager supports it. That said, it's a competitive place and it's difficult to differentiate your performance and advance by just "doing an OK job."

I have been working at Genentech full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I have met many different types of people and personalities and there's never a dull moment.
I believe I am fairly paid across industry standards, I get 12 hours of paid vacation a month, and the company is a huge advocate of making positive changes that enhance our safety, quality and production.

    Cons

This company is well-known, but like many companies, still very disorganized, possibly due to high turn over rates. I've had over 7 supervisors in the last 5 years and it's hard to create a positive reputation or to demonstrate growth to those in positions to hire or promote due to high turn-over rate for even leadership personnel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep people-oriented. As a leader, you should want to command a group that will out of respect voluntarily choose to follow and aid in your vision that not only benefits the company, but benefits the development and growth of your personnel.

I worked at Genentech full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Too many to name... noble work, great compensation, good people to work with, leaders who care about development and employee welfare (ymmv), food, food, food, concerts, beautiful campus, sense of community & volunteerism and more!

    Cons

Work/life balance: depending on where you are, there is often a work to your max (and sometimes beyond) atmosphere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Being a fast paced, dynamic company has led to a great amount of turnover in leadership (mostly due to advancement- a good thing!). Some of the new leaders (or new in position leaders) were great individual contributors, but need some work as people managers. Take or find the time to help them improve. And be wary of running too lean.

I have been working at Genentech as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Similar to many large companies where focus gets real tight as number of employees increases that is typical.
Bus service for workers is a strong benefit as well as the discounted cafeteria which is pretty good.

    Cons

Contractors or temps are treated with less benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    keep doing a good job.

    Pros

Smartest minds in the world about disease areas and a culture that is focused on helping patients and keeping employees happy; Lots of on-site amenities like a full gym, shuttles that bring you to work, subsidized cafeterias with multiple healthy, delicious options.

    Cons

Have to be doing a new job for some time before being promoted to the new job title and receiving a salary increase.
