    Pros

Good benefits, lots of job opportunities.

Biotech is a risky industry. The pay here does not necessarily reflect the cost of living in the Bay Area.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people who I work with have great attitudes and sincerely care about delivering quality products to our patients. There is also a focus on employee development, though that is dependent on your direct manager.

    Cons

The work can get a bit old sometimes. I am lucky that it's not very political in the group that I work in, but it can definitely get political in the research realms of the company.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people, the work aligned with vision, values, and future possibilities to impact people in need, resources and rewards for employees. The thoughtfulness and engagement of those I work with.

    Cons

I get very tired by end of day due to the pace and high expectations but that is collectively a good thing for me and the org.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Admire the people I work with and enjoy working with them. Work is challenging yet rewarding. Comp and benefits together are fantastic.

    Cons

Work-life balance is fine, but don't come here expecting it will be handed to you. Instead, you have to own it and drive it and ensure your manager supports it. That said, it's a competitive place and it's difficult to differentiate your performance and advance by just "doing an OK job."

I worked at Genentech full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Too many to name... noble work, great compensation, good people to work with, leaders who care about development and employee welfare (ymmv), food, food, food, concerts, beautiful campus, sense of community & volunteerism and more!

    Cons

Work/life balance: depending on where you are, there is often a work to your max (and sometimes beyond) atmosphere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Being a fast paced, dynamic company has led to a great amount of turnover in leadership (mostly due to advancement- a good thing!). Some of the new leaders (or new in position leaders) were great individual contributors, but need some work as people managers. Take or find the time to help them improve. And be wary of running too lean.
