I have been working at Genentech full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Company truly does stick to values in terms of following science and doing what is right for the patient. Great benefits and stable organization (excellent pipeline). Work with great people. Great resources to get the job done.

    Cons

Very difficult to get promoted from within. Can get exceeds expectations multiple years in a row, but still not be perfect enough. There is quite a bit of politics at play in deciding on promotions. If you are not in with the right leaders, criteria changes and you don't get promoted. Easier for people to come in at those higher levels externally. They also come in with higher compensation. People who have been with company for many years tend to fall behind in salaries. Becoming overwhelmed with process. It seems every week, there is a new process or SOP to adhere to that really doesn't affect quality of work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Apply historical promotional data in terms of quality of work when making decisions for promotions. Have your employee's back - don't let one person 3 levels up make the decision for your employee. The loyal employees and strong performers will be recruited away if their compensation isn't at market rate. Rate all processes put in place from 1 - 10, and eliminate anything below 6. Is it critical to the success of the job?

I have been working at Genentech full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This company used to be great to work for pre merger. Post merger not so much. The time off, 401K and salaries are competitive. They say they are focused on the patient and the science actually is. Paid sabbatical after 6 years. If you do not work in Access Solutions there are other perks as long as you aren't tied to your desk.

    Cons

Different departments have different opportunities and depending on which department you work in you may be able to move around more easily. Within the MCCO Access Solutions department there is very little ability to advance or be promoted. There is no dedicated training team for new hires to do a specific job role. Training is the responsibility of the FTE employees who are expected to still fulfill their daily quota or metric. Expectations are much too high with the roll out of newer computerized systems. Customer service being provided post merger is no where near the quality it used to be. Roche is focused on making money vs the customer experience. Annual bonuses have decreased a great deal. Health benefits are very good but have become much more costly and offer less coverage. Poor decision making stemming from the top of the department in Access Solutions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a team of staff dedicated to training for all role specific jobs. Do not display favoritism. Listen to the mantra of the culture you say we have and let work and life both have a balance. Work hard play hard no longer exists for Access Solutions staff.

I have been working at Genentech

    Pros

Good work life balance. Good benefits. Stable. Inspiring mission. Smart people. Culture. Pay. Perks.

    Cons

Politics. Questionable behaviors from leaders. Managers rating performance based on personal feelings rather than objective criteria. Broken 360 feedback process. Lack of transparency around promotion criteria.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more time to vet the character of leaders rather than greater emphasis towards their work success. In my years here, I've experienced 2 senior leaders behaving unethically and people looking the other way, several managers treating their employees horribly but got promoted because they managed up very nicely and people were too scared to speak up, HR failing to protect an employee from retaliation and sexual harassment. Genentech is a great company overall, but there are some bad people that have slipped through the cracks that have significantly impacted lives in a negative way.

I worked at Genentech full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Generous benefits including perks like awesome gym and great cafeterias.

    Cons

Poor work-life balance. Competitive environment (instead of collaborative). It has become bogged down in the corporate, profit-driven structure that is Roche. It used to be science and patient driven (and wildly profitable to boot).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spin Genentech back off as a stand alone company and attempt to return it to its former glory.

I worked at Genentech as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Great people, large labs, layout of all buildings are different from each other, great food in the many cafeterias, game rooms, and a gym. Views of bay.

    Cons

Long hours, contractors not allowed to go to company sponsored parties (you can get dirty looks), cannot get close parking as you must park in a special lot. Basically treated like scum. Must wear a badge as it's the only way to get into buildings and cafeterias.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes, departmental managers are under a lot of pressure to produce results but please realize to do so mistakes can and will be made. Introduce yourself to your minions even if they are a contractor.

I have been working at Genentech as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

GREAT experience, lot's of fun and challenging. People stay extremely spportive and really want you to do your best.
People around you are all very smart.

    Cons

People expect a lot from you and you really need to be focused the entire time, despite goodies and distractions. They are generally passive aggressive, so you should be aware that if you haven't met expectations, management be very unhappy with you, even if they won't say it explicitly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good Job, means "Good Job", not see you later!
