  5. I must be an anomaly.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Company reputation is very good.

    Cons

The hiring process was the worst I have experienced. Compensation package vs. cost of living only makes sense with short term (3 year) COLA if you are relocating (at least in my situation). The initial offer was somewhere between comical and insulting when they brought in a financial advisor who tried to tell me that I could “easily afford” to live in SF by cutting my investment contributions in half and empty out my liquid cash. HR also fully believed that living in SF was the same as living in Southern CA where my mortgage (including insurance) for a bungalow 4 blocks from the beach was $1k less per month than median rent in SF. HR was quite confrontational with me on this, but did stop just short of calling me a liar so that may be a pro. I ended up taking the position (admittedly my own fault based on experience above) since I still expected that I was going to work for a great company, but I spend quite a bit of time providing insight with very little knowledge gain in a culture that believes its own hyperbole. Also, “outstanding” Spouse job support consisted of a poorly written resume revamp and a list of $5k out of pocket “networking” events to attend to get into the job market. As a final thought, endless meetings every week where collaboration means no one makes a decision, but it did make another “Best Companies” list.

I worked at Genentech (More than a year)

    Pros

I loved the environment - it was called "casual intensity". It was a fun and casual place to work but the people that I worked with were all intelligent and hard working. Great flexibility with the schedule and work/life balance.

    Cons

Not sure what it is like now that the company has grown a lot and is part of Roche

I worked at Genentech full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good team environment, challenging work, lots of ever-changing experience, good managers and co-workers. Good balance of work/play within the company. Lots of fun teambuilding activities, bbq's, get-togethers, etc.

    Cons

Very political environment in regards to promotions, not a lot of lateral movement. Once you're in a position you're likely to stay and max out at that salary position given they don't tend to promote within.

    Advice to Management

Promote within, outside talent is not always the best talent.
